When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
2002 silverado, crew cab, 8.1, 61000 mi
I installed a K and N FIPK 5 nights ago. Unpluged the MAF and plugged it back in when completed. No SES light. Truck runs fine. Changed the park neutral switch on the allison tranny about 4 or 5 weeks ago. SES light was on before the change out. SES light went out after change out of the P-N switch was completed. Today, normal driving, the SES light came on. I was right by my dealer. I stopped in and they pulled the codes. Wanted to charge me $40, but they didn't. Anyway, the computer had 2 codes - The MAF and the park nuetral switch. Keep in mind, the truck is running fine. The tech reset the computer. All is good now I told the tech I'd give him $100 for the scanner on the spot. He just laughed. I want the scanner! (the tech 2 of course) Question, when you disconnect and reconnect a component, does this have some sort of delyed reaction on the computer?? |

Re: When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
sometimes a computer will light when it stores the code but go off until it goes through enough drive cycles to verify a problem....those scanners cost a bit more than 100 bucks, atleast the ones FT techs have...go to parts store and they have cheap ones i think right around 100 bucks or so

Re: When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
Thanks for the info 99.
I know the tech 2 scanners are worth about 3 to 4k plus software. Is there a cheap scanner available to read silveados codes?? |

Re: When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
aren't the Hyperchip and supertuners now advertising that they can read the codes?

Re: When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
The light is supposed to turn on right before the inspection or when you have no money in your wallet until next friday!

Re: When is the SES Light Supposed to Light?
there are really cheap scanners that can just read the codes. Then there are slightly more expensive scanners that can read and clear the codes, and then there are really expensve units that will actually tell you what is wrong with the vehicle and not just what code is being thrown. I've noticed with one of the more advanced scanners that there can be a part that is presenting a code for a while before the SES light will come on. This is usually a very short period of time. Maybe your computer has a longer than normal delay for some reason or another.
