02 Explorer's would be one of the most popular retrofits. Any engine within the modualr family, should fit in without any major fab work. 4.6's, 5.4's mainly.

These will fit within the engine bay. No guaranty on hood clearence.
302 (5.0L), 351 (5.8L), 460 3.8L & 4.2L V6 4.6L SOHC & DOHC 5.4L SOHC The 5.4L DOHC engine will not fit.

Going with a 5.0 will dictate the necessity to change ecu and wiring harness, transmission, accessories, etc...
