acclaim top speed
my friend has an 1992 plymouth acclaim with the 4 cylinder engine in it. the speedometer says it goes 120 so he thinks it will do that.. my car is a 96 grand am se with the v6 3.1 and the speedometer goes to 115 but it cuts out at 105. i was jsut wondering how fast his car will go cuz hes keeps sayin hes at it at 110 on the highway and that it will do 120.

As far as I know, there is no speed govenor on the Chrysler computers like your Grand Am has, but the 2.5 4 that he has in his Acclaim is not know as being a real powerfull engine unless it had a turbo on it.
Your car would get to 105 much faster than his, but he would probably be able to go faster just because of the speed govenor that is built into the engine computer. Just as a note, alot of Fords also have this built into the engine computer also, for GMs you can replace the chip inside the computer, but for Fords, the entire computer must be replaced. |

Re: acclaim top speed
If I may chime in, I think your friend is blowing smoke, a 2.5 Acclaim, IF it can reach 120 MPH, it'll take 30 min. for it to go that fast. Plus the 2.5s came w/ a 3-speed tranny and at 100+ MPH, he'd be taching at 5,000 RPM. I thought there was a speed limiter, but if not, he has a rev limiter and he'd be bouncing of his rev limiter at 105-110. I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid and the speed limiter kicks in at around 110; I used to have a '92 Dodge Spirit (sister car to the Acclaim) w/ a 3.0 V6 and it topped out at 115.

Re: acclaim top speed
My friends duster went 110, and it had a 2.5. I have an acclaim with the 3.0 and i've gone 120+ in it.

Re: acclaim top speed
ive got a 91 acclaim 3.0 and actually topped it out at 120(didnt take as long as i thought, but long enough ). it is as the gov will take you. it wont let u accelerate until you get back down to about 80.

Re: acclaim top speed
I have a '93 Acclaim with the 3.0 V6 and I have ran it as hard as I could, just to see what it would do. It has something limiting its speed to 185 Km/H on my speedo, which is a little off, at that speed prolly about 10-15 Km/H out. So there is either a rev limiter (it is at about 3150RPM in O.D. when it tops) or a computer restrictor (my dad has the Spirit, with a ECU mod and it can be changed at the chip, so his is unlimited).
