How hot does your exhaust manifold get?

Yes, it's not street racing ... but the people in here are who appreciate such things

Watch the video ...

http://www.presspley.com/F1/video/Pr...1%20Fireup.mpg

Infos on the video:
"At the end of the season, the teams have a competition to see who can generate the highest RPM or simply to create the most light and noise. The car is sitting on stands and is "fired up" or started by an engineer on a laptop. He has a throttle control in his hand (called a pit pedal, basically looks like a controller for a Scalextrix toy car) and he can rev the car in anyway he wants. The car is connected via a large "Umbilical" cord which from the goes from the side of the car and goes into "jump battery" which in turn has a network switch in and some other electronics components with which the laptop and hand throttle then speak to and control the car. The car does have an IP address!"

First the engine is warmed up and the exhausts begin to glow red then white hot. The car involved was an Orange Arrows. With the way the exhausts are shaped ('periscope' layout), I'd say the video is from 2002 - their last year in Formula 1.

The EGT achieved would be around 800 degrees Celsius.

That video actually helps to explain why F1 cars overheat so quickly when at a standstill. It took less than 30 seconds for the exhaust manifold to start glowing bright orange as the car was idling with the covers removed. Because Formula 1 cars have no ventilation fans and rely entirely on their passage through the air to cool themselves, it doesn't take long for a car sitting idling at 6000rpm to cook itself."

If I remember correctly, steel becomes molten metal at tempratures above 1000 degrees celcius.

a welding torch is 5900 degrees farenheit. that melts steel obviously... so it can get pretty hot.

Thermite burns at 3000*C.. How hot does a magnezium tube with O2 forced through it burn?

He's got ear plugs in ... they are hanging on a string around his neck like a necklace.

Re: Re: How hot does your exhaust manifold get?

Psh, thats how I warm up my Bonneville every morning.

Yes, that's right, I pull the body off the chassis, rev the piss out of it, and cook my breakfast on the exhaust manifold. Sure beats Wheaties...

Re: How hot does your exhaust manifold get?

That's insane, anyone else watching F1? Mixed feelings about the one tire change rule.

Re: How hot does your exhaust manifold get?

This belongs in the F1 forum, but I think it's good, because it'll make the drivers manage their tires better, and it'll pose a big challenge to the manufacturers to make a high-grip but long-lasting tire as well...now if they could only do something about that engine formula....bring back the turbo era!
