Exhaust Question

Can I install duel exhaust with my 3.8 that would work with a 4.6 if I put one in? Or are the exhausts different? I wouldn't think so, but I don't know for sure. I only ask because yes, I do want to get rid of the rasping from the heat shields on my cats, but don't want to waste my money if I have to get new cats and exhaust if I'm able to get a V8 sooner than expected.
