Some questions about older Silverados..

Hey y'all, new to this forum, cool place! Anyway, I am very interested in buying an older model truck, and have really had my sights set on an early 80's Silverado. Not just any though, I am dying to find a flareside (i think that's the bodystyle).

Now, I don't know all that much about older Silverados, and was hoping you all could help me.

I posted a picture below of the EXACT style I want. Is this called "Flareside?"

What years did they make that model truck with that body-style?

I have been looking in autotrader.com and have only found that one. Can anyone recommend other Silverado/Chevy/Older truck Forums, websites where I could see some as well? Enthusiast sites?

Also, where are some other places to look for the truck I want other than autotrader.com?

I live in MD and check the paper, and have found lots of early Silverado's, but none with this bodystyle?

Re: Some questions about older Silverados..

My understanding is that only Ford refers to this bodystyle as 'Flareside'. Everyone else refers to it as 'Stepside'.

I did a quick search on AutoMart using just 'Chevrolet','Silverado', my zipcode, any distance and the years 1978 - 1990. Looks like 1986 was at least one year:

Re: Some questions about older Silverados..

you can probly get some more info in the C&K forum that deals with the particular year silverado you are asking about and faze is correct, for chevy it is a step side and the regular body style (the more common) is known as the fleet side. fords are know as flare side.

Thats what it is, A step-side. Dont see to many of them around see if you can find local offroad get togethers, and stuff like that and ask around. C/K form is the place to go for info on older trucks.

Re: Some questions about older Silverados..

And then someone at GM got smart and had to change the name of the "Stepside" to "Sportside in the 99 body change. How does that saying go....when they got it figured out change the question??? OOppps, that was the womens creed...

That appears to be a 1974 model. 1980 got rectangular headlights. In 1981 the grille and front fender/hood are changed, but was still, essentially, the same truck. My dad had an 84 with a 305 that got around 700,000 miles on the engine before it died. He went through 3 or 4 trannies, tho.
