Good idea or Bad idea?
(3000gt sl) Alright here's the deal I can either rebuild my engine by putting in high compression pistons, polishing the heads, get new exhaust, headers and an intake. That I believe is in my budget. The other is to just get a vr4 engine which is around 2.4k not counting instaling. Any ideas on how much HP i can gain from my first option? Is it possible to get 300hp with all that? Which option would you recomend I do with a limited budget. Thanks for the help.

Re: Good idea or Bad idea?
Check the NA upgrading bible in the FAQ for approx. hp guesses. Also know you will need more than just the vr4 engine...

Re: Good idea or Bad idea?
If it were me, I would save up for a VR4 (which I did after buying the SL). But it would be very cool to have a monster NA 3000GT, if you do that you gotta go all out though.

Re: Re: Good idea or Bad idea?
I was contemplating building a monster SOHC NA. Then I realized I was going to be dumping a lot of money into the car and it still wouldnt be fast enough for me. I know with heads being done up, cams, high compression pistons etc I woulda had a fast ass SOHC but it would be limited to what I did. No more could add more power, nitorus/forced induction is a basic no no for a streetable high compression(11:1 or 12:1) car.
I decided to save my money and am going to eventually single turbo it. With a single turbo once I get all the supporting mods I could always upgrade and boom instant power. I also am going to add a VR4 to my stable.

Re: Re: Re: Good idea or Bad idea?
NO you can keep your stock tranny. You might want to look into an lsd though for traction woes. It really depends on the set up you go with. A guy on 3si is developing a single turbo kit for SOHC's that is looking to run about $3500 for everything. Thats a t3/t4 hybrid turbo, header, crosspipe, fmic, and about everything you need to hook it up. The only other thihngs you would need would be injectors and a SAFC. Yes thats alot of money to put into a FWD SOHC but it will be a hell of a car to beat from a roll.
![]() You might even find someone who is getting rid of a set up. You can also consider doing a TT conversion keeping the 10:1 compression. Basically same as doing a single T except everything will be bolt on.
