99 cherokee starting problem,stalling,no idle {NOW FIXED}
Going on a month now. Had it at the dealership - they couldn't fix it.
Have taken to another dealership. Heres the problem. First time the problem occurred: warmed up jeep about 10 min. Pulled out of drive and jeep died. Would not start. Pushed back into driveway and left it there until home from work. Next attempt would not start UNLESS I pumped the accelerator, would not idle though, had to keep accelerator pressed slightly to keep motor idling. Some of the times after the problem occurrs there is alot of black smoke from the tail pipe. This clears up after I drive it a mile or so. Drove to dealership and by the time I got there it was fine. Dealership had jeep for a week and couldn't find the problem, started and ran fine for them. Jeep worked fine for a couple of weeks and then the same thing again.The problem has happened about 6 times and is sporatic. Problem happend today and on my way to the other dealership I had to keep the accelerator pressed to keep it running and when I got there it ran fine. So after reading this board I am left with these possibilities: fuel pump, cam position senser, throttle position sensor, O2 sensor, fuel filter. Is there any way to test these areas without having to replace all of them. The check engine light never has come on. There are no codes in the computer. The dealer wants 600 bucks if its the fuel pump. Maybe the this dealership will test the various possibilities? This is getting old..... Sounds like the crank position sensor. It's responsible for advancing and retarding the timing. That would explain the black smoke..To rich of a mixture in the fuel..It takes about 10 minutes with 1 wrench to change it. Not to expensive either.

It seems like a sensor that is within the transmission (it is on the higher part of the crankshaft, and you'll see the connectors running out of the transmission on the driver side of the motor--I forgot the name of the sensor but it may be the crankshaft sensor).
The reason I'm saying this is I had a 94 jeep cherokee and it would stall on me sporadically, leaving me stranded anywhere, or it would not start at all when I would crank it. However, once the jeep would rest for a while, it would work perfectly fine. Luckily I took it to a shop to get the fuel pump pressure checked (which checked fine), and the man told me what the problem was. I bought that sensor for about $60 at autozone and the problem was automatically fixed. So if your jeep has the same symptoms, you may wish to check the voltage on those connections and find additional information regarding that sensor.

It Has Been Fixed Now !!!!!!!!
HAS BEEN FIXED NOW!!! Took jeep to dealer. They had it one day. They tested all the sensors and the fuel pressure. This is what they said would fix it....
THE BATTERY......THE BATTERY!!!! I put in a new battery last summer. So I didn't give it a second thought. But what they say is happeining is this. My son put in a stereo system with an amp. The amp is slowly draining the battery until the computer doesn't have enough juice to apply the correct settings to the sensors. Made sense to me. So put in a new battery and thus far (2days) no problems. Now I have to have that boy of mine put in a higher amp alternator. What an easy fix...... Thanks for the replies..... Troy
