WTF is a Type R Civic??

I was reading up on engine swaps and came across a B16 Type R....I thought that it was a mistake, maybe they meant B18 Type R, but no. I haven't heard of a USDM Type R. I guess its in an EK hatch whatever that is. Can someone explain this to me and if they're a US car or if they're strictly Japan only. Pics??

Re: WTF is a Type R Civic??

Japan/UK only. Motor is a B16B, it's basically a destroked B18A/B/C motor, it uses the B18 deck height paired with a regular B16 stroke crankshaft and longer rods. A simple search on google for civic type R will net you hundreds of results.

boosted331 is right. It was never available in the US, but it was a B16B (puts out 185hp@8200rpm) mated to an EK (96-00 Hatchback) chassis. A former member of AF, Ricochet, used to have one in his EK.

Maybe if you've been snorting coke, but those sure look like CTR headlights to me.

Re: WTF is a Type R Civic??

So there is no way to get one of those over in the US? Is it worth the price to buy the engine, or is a GSR a better swap choice? I am considering buying a GSR swap after this next school year, and all in all that looks like a great engine for NA set ups and for turbo applications. I just happened to come across that CTR engine as i was searching. I've heard of EK hatches and Civic Type R's, but i never thought that they were real. I thought that they were only on video games and other things. Moreover i thought that the Si was what they were considering the Type R. Thanks for clearing that up.

I would go with the gsr swap.Yes the b16b engine is strong but for the price, you could just save up a little more an get an Integra R swap. For the performance, it's just to much money.

You could probably get one over to the US if you really wanted to. But I think theres too much trouble involved for it to be worht it.

I would only suggest the B16B if you're planning to stay all-motor; the stock compression (which I believe is 10.8:1) is far too high to be boosting on stock. If you want to go boost, the GSR is a better candidate. The extra displacement is helpful in the longrun also.

Re: WTF is a Type R Civic??

Yeah you could get a type r over here if you wanted, but it'd cost a ton. I know a guy who was going to get one, I forget what he said it would cost though (think some where around $20,000). They have to change the parts over to LHD at customs, and then the company who imports it for you has to change it back to RHD. So you're paying for the car, shipping, import taxes, change over costs, reverse change over costs, and then regular state taxes; too much $ and not worth it IMO.
As for the b16b engine, it's not worth it unless you're going for a show car. It's all about buying it for bragging rights of saying you have a CTR engine under your hood. You can buy a GS-R swap and spend the rest of the $ on add-ons; and have a lot more tq, hp, and $ than doing a CTR swap.

headlights are clear and everything, but doesn't look as tinted as the rest of them, side molding, wheels, side marker, side mirrors...everything else looks real...just the headlights look kinda..."out there"

CTR (96-98) headlights are supposed to be clear, only from 99-00 did they switch to black housing. I think you've fallen for the common belief that all JDM = Smoked and/or Black housing.

[sarc]Seems to me that your headlights are the ones that look "out there". [/sarc]

CivicSpoon is right. The B16B is far more a novelty than it is a performer. Don't get me wrong though, it puts out a lot for what it is. But there is far less potential in it than the GSR, boost and all-motor.

Here's a pic of former member Ricochet's B16B he swapped into his USMD civic. It was the motor that powered the Civic Type-R.

Here's a pic of the engine code on it

It would be FAR easier and cheaper to swap the B16B in than it would be to have a Type-R shipped here and legelized. Civic Type-R's were sold in Japan ans the UK as has been said, and the B16B is the motor in the Civic Type-R. However, even Ricochet would have told you the motor is overrated. For the lesser price, you'll get more torque from GSR...plus you can't really boost a Type-R too easy...yes, it's been down but it's hard and can't handle boost well due to a very high C/R of 10.6 or 10.8:1.

On thr upside...all type-r motors (integra and civic) came with an LSD tranny. However, you can also buy JDM SiR trannys with an LSD option, though be careful...not all of them had it, it was an option.

Re: WTF is a Type R Civic??

So do you think that a GSR with an LSD option would be a better choice than a B16A or the CTR engine?? Would that be a swap that i could do pretty easilty?? It would fit in almost directly w/ the use of new conversion motor mounts. I would buy a complete swap....engine, tranny, ecu, axles, accesories, wiring harnesses......would that be a direct drop in? Or would there be some fabricating and searching for parts???
