Angry 89' will not go faster then 70mph plz help!

Ok i have a 1989 dodge dakota 3.9 v6 which i just bought about 2 months ago and has 57,000 miles on it. When I go on the highway it will shift into the 4th gear and will just stick at about 2k rpm and will not go above 70mph. Also on a side note it has very slow acceleration going up hills. What can i do to fix this problem? Thank ahead of time.

The pre-magnum 239 isn't a very stout engine. 125 nhp IIRC. My '88 ran out of breath around 70mph, same (****) 4spd auto. Given that the curb weight is over 5k according to the sticker on my door, that's not a lot. Torque is slightly less than the 225 slant that it replaced. Give it a complete flush and tuneup. Mine didn't have problems accelerating, just it ran out of breath around 70mph. Might also check the diagnostics; see if any computer crap is out.

A good air intake and exhaust setup can help some (I have the exhaust on mine). The TBI is inefficient;you should (I don't know for sure though) be able to get the multi-port EFI off a later engine and use it; and that'll help both power and economy. Remember to get all the computer crap that goes with the MFI. That's on my list of things to do if I don't say the hell with it and build my 318 and stuff it in there..

Take it to a dealer and see if they can help because the motor is in great condition . change out the spark plugs, air cleaner and if you get Exhaust and a air intake get the computer recalibrated. also change all the fluids and if that dosent help sell the peice of shit

Re: 89' will not go faster then 70mph plz help!

Mine used to be the SAME way. It was because my Torque convertor was fried, the front pump in my tranny was shot, so I had TONS of drag there. And my EGR valve was shot. It used to run out of breath @ 70 now it won't run out until about 90 so.

Hope you figure it outs

I'd suggest actually fixing it before throwing money away on intake and exhaust sytems. FFS, you don't try and modify a vehicle that isn't running right to begin with! No vehicle made today will run out of steam at only 70mph. You either have a clogged cat or some other issue. Take it to a trusted shop and have it looked at.
