95 trans problem

I have a 95 grand cherokee. Has low miles and I'm the 2nd owner. The cars runs great with exception that it will not shift into 1st geer while it's in drive. Once i get up to speed it runs strong and goes, but at take off i have no 1st geer to get up and go. i can manually shift it. i decided to maybe replace tha kickdown cable. so I went to the Dealership to purchase the kick down cable and they gave me the bad news, that the cable has been cancelled (discontinued) My tranny is a 42re. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 95 trans problem

If I remember correctly, first gear when in drive relies on a one way clutch in the back planetary while manual first gear uses the low/reverse band for engagement.

Can't remember if there is a solinoid used for first gear or not but check into it further, if it is the oneway clutch, a teardown is coming - not so lucky.

If you are serious about trying another kickdown cable, check with an aftermarket parts house or transmission shop. Not sure that the kick down cable is your problem...

Re: 95 trans problem

I doubt the kickdown cable is your problem but try disconnecting it from the throttle body and see if it changed anything. Have you checked the tranny fluid level.

97 trans problem

I went to a transmission repair shop. They could not even get a code for this problem. the tech say that it does not seem like a geer problem (1st geer) I told him that the it seems like it's stuck in 2nd geer, also let him know that the OD is not working. He test drove the vehicle. say trans okay that it may be a fuse in regards to the ODand maybe that's my problem. check all the fuses and replace the overdrive fuse. Still the same. I know that these vehicles have a trans module. Has anyone else come across this problem?I've read every thing in the manual.

HELP !!!!

Re: 95 trans problem

my 94 4x4 gc limited 4.0 was starting out in 2 nd gear when i bought it , it shifted manually in all gears , the problem turned out to be the governer solinoid, and transducer solinoid in the trans under the filter , was $300.00 parts and dealers labor , but it works like new , also the dealer found a metal washer installed on the old parts, that grounded them out , needed a non metalic washer , you cant use steel in an elctronic trans
