Power Sliding Door Troubles

Would anyone have access to the Bulletin released in May 2002 regarding the Power Sliding Door? Our '99 Montana is having issues with this door, and the extended warranty company will not honor any issue in which their is a bulletin on.

Our dealership recommened we call GM to see if they will work with us, as it is over $600 to replace. Has anyone ever had any luck in doing this? They said they may not do anything, or may pay 1/2 of the cost.

Here is the bulletin below. If you're going to get stuck having to eat the cost yourself, pull the contact assembly out of the door frame and the plunger assembly out of the door and clean and resolder the connections. Try this before you replace the part. Also make sure the plungers and contacts are all clean so that there is good contact when the door closes.

I dealt with this for over 2 years on my 97 Trans Sport. It took around 12 trips to the dealer and two seperate letters to two different presidents of GM Canada before they finally fixed it (they were certain this wasn't the problem, but it was in the end). It got resoved about 15,000 kms after my warranty expired but they came good on it.

Power Sliding Door - Reverses on Closing
File In Section: 08 - Body and Accessories
Bulletin No.: 02-08-64-011
Date: May, 2002

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Power Sliding Door Reverses on Closing (Replace Plunger and Contact Plate Using Kit; Replace Door Module and Latch, If Applicable)

Models:
1997-1999 Chevrolet Venture
1997-2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette
1997-2000 Pontiac Trans Sport
1999-2000 Pontiac Montana

Attention: Make sure all prior recalls have been performed prior to the completion of this bulletin

Condition

Some customers may comment that the power sliding door (PSD) will reverse on closing or the door will appear closed, but the alarm will come on when the transmission is moved out of Park.

Cause

Corrupted detent switch signals may cause the above malfunctions. The PSD system relies on signals generated by the detent switch on the latch and transmitted through the plungers on the door side and pads on the body side to determine that the door is fully latched.

Correction

Important: For 1997 and 1998 Extended Wheelbase (5th VIN character "X") vehicles, follow Steps 1 through 3.

For 1998 Regular Wheelbase (5th VIN character "U"), and all 1999 and 2000 vehicles up to VINs 1GNDX03E3YD100089, 1GHDX03E9YD100147, and 1GMDX03E4YD100087, follow Steps 1 through 5.

1. Replace the door side plunger and harness, which is supplied in the connector kit.

2. Use the diagram and harness in the kit to upgrade the wire harness in the "B" pillar. This is an advantage to the PSD system electrical circuits in that the 1892 detent (latch ) signal and the 750 ground are doubled through the door to body contacts.

3. Replace the flat contact plate on the "B" pillar which is supplied in the connector kit.

Important: Both the controller and latch must be replaced. The new latch will not function with the previous versions of the controller.

4. Replace the Power Sliding Side Door Controller. Refer to the Doors subsection of the Service Manual for module replacement (SI Document ID # 508665).

5. Replace the Power Sliding Side Door Latch. Refer to the Doors subsection of the Service Manual for latch replace. (SI Document ID # 508709).

6. Reinitialize the door after repair. Refer to the Doors subsection of the Service Manual for Power Sliding Door (PSD) Re-initialization (SI Document ID # 601816).

Got the card in the mail about this recall (several years ago). Our 97' van was out of warranty. Took it to a GM dealer per the card and it was covered 100%. Being a safty issue, arent they liable and have to do it no cost??

I would have thought that this would be done at no charge since it is a recall...not just a service bulletin. Mine was still considered to be on warranty so it never became an issue.
