boosted ls once made 325 hp, needs help

my freidn bought a 90 civic hatch with a 325 ls engine, built internals, boosted 12 psi. etc. anyway. that was a whileago that the car had been like that. nowadays it feels like its only 200. his cams are at o degrees. and he doesnt believe me that we should retard his timing like 3 degrees. he saying that he just going to wait to get it "tuned prperly" now ive never had my car tuned or anything. but from basic understanding. they adjsut the cams and mess around with the fuel flow rates in the ecu. what else is done in the turnign process. and should he let me retard his timing 3 degrees?

Re: boosted ls once made 325 hp, needs help

they dont mess with cam timing to retard. its distributor timing thats messed with electronically not phyically.

if he never messed with the fuel or the timing and ran 12psi. his motor is toast. tell him to do a compression check

Re: boosted ls once made 325 hp, needs help

his car was dyno tuned to 325 hp, i bet the fuel and timing was tuned with that. now, i dont know waht had happened but his car became untuned, his rev limiter is not at 5500, and like i said it only feels like 200 hp, but hes been beating on it, hes raced a vette. i didnt see it, but with a limiter of 5500 i doubt the turbo and shit really would help him beat a vette. and i know he beat a sebring. so i dont know.

and to the original poster. you didnt give us alot of info. i mean you never even said if his car was tuned at all, or even specs on the motor. you cant even verify if it was tuned accordingly or not. and my car can beat a sebring so idk what to say about that. cars dont become untuned by themselves in a sense that the programmed fuel maps dont change. something with the motor must have changed, did he add any new parts to it ?

again i would recommend a compression check, post up results

Re: boosted ls once made 325 hp, needs help

"ive got it...hes running 87 octane"...no just kidding...i agree with civic killer...this guy should have his license revoked, a b20 with a 19.5 liter over bore....very very possible...have it towed to a shop...he prolly skipped a tooth on his timing belt, thats what happend 2 my civic(2teeth) and it wouldn't go past 6ooorpm, and be easy when u post..calm down and take your time with spelling...

k, so. im at his house, he engine will now not turn over. the engine does not start. you can hear the fuel pump engage and all that jazz, but nothing. he says it could be his battery. but his lights and evverything work fine. so he says best case scenario to jsut get his car running everyday is the alternator. worst case, cracked pistons, bent rods, no compression, etc.
person who built the car says rev limiter set to 8500
3rd gear tops at 5500, and it sputters
during normal driving you could smell the unburnt fuel.
boost controller does nothing. wastegate has a 12 pound spring

So your friend is reving an LS motor to 8500 rpms, it has a b20 crank, is bored out, and he's running 12psi of boost?
I'd say skip the compression test and just rip the head off of there to see the damage he's caused. Then rebuild the engine for the damage done, get a boost controller (even one of those really cheap ones), and run 6-7psi until it can be professionally tuned (because someone who doesn't know how to do a compression test should not be trying to tune a car themselves).

Re: boosted ls once made 325 hp, needs help

ok, the engine wont rev past 5500, its bored out to 1.95 liters. it has built internals, sleeved block, rods, pistons etc. he had a shop put in the boost controller. and no matter how low he turns it down. the boost guage always reads 12 psi. and u can definately feel the turbo. we think the battery just doesnt have enough power to make it turn over. apparently it can be turned on with a jump start. so we think it could be the alternator
