Should the Crown Vic get the new Mustang GT's 300 hp V-8?
The 05 Mustang GT's V-8 has 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. It also has an aluminum block which helps shed 75 pounds.

As long as it is based on the 4.6 block design, it should bolt right in! The PCM is really what sets the power output of the engine, so that is just a matter of programming. The real key to this question is can the tranny hold up to it. Fords main weakness in any vehicle is the transmission, especially in their SuperDuty trucks, the new torqueshift has major problems with the reverse sprag backing out of the case, and the 4R100 with weak torque converters and reverse packs not holding up to the power of the diesel engines. I remember when I rebuilt my AOD I replaced the 2 piece input shaft with a 1 piece billet so I wouldnt tear up the overdrive or the torque converter with the increase HP from my blue printed 5.0. I dont know the design of the AODE that they are running, but they do have weaknesses as well.
Besides if they can put the DOHC into the Marauder, they should have no problems doing the same with the CV. |

Hell yeah. Why?- Because if Fords competitor, Chevy Caprice, had the vette engine slapped in it then Ford should secure its dominance of the rear wheel drive sedan market with power and performance by having a big engine in it.
Right now Ford has it nice with all police/taxi/fleet vehicles needing rear wheel drive durability. But soon a competitor will re-introduce a rear wheel drive vehicle into the market that may oust Ford.

Re: Should the Crown Vic get the new Mustang GT's 300 hp V-8?
But who would that be? Aside from Cadilac, who else makes a full size rear wheel chassis? Car makers go for front wheel drive because it is much cheaper for them to assemble them. A full size rear wheel car requires a full frame chassis if you want to get the strength and rigidity needed for a good ride. A front drive car is all unibody, cheaper to make, and the the drive train is an all in one unit, they pop right in with a few bolts, a chassis vehicle has the engine/transmission asssembly, the rear diff, and the drive shaft that all get installed on the frame and then they drop the body onto it. It surprises me that Ford can still sell the CV and GM at the price they sell them at, while others sell their cheaper version of "luxury" cars at higher prices. Honestly, what makes a lexus any better than a Fully loaded, smooth riding, powerful, loaded with room CV? If I had a choice between the two I would always go for the ford.

Back in the day of the 5.0 and 5.8l CVPI, there was talk about putting the Mustang HO version of the 5.0l in the PD car. It was turned down by Ford since the PD cars are such a limited production vehicle. (most PD cars are built at the end of the production year, and they used to be built with what was left over from that years production) So I doubt Ford will ever do it even if Chrysler or maybe Chevy (I doubt that even more ) came out with a good run for the money V-8 rear wheel drive PD car.
I am still waiting for the 5.9 l rear drive Chrysler PD car that has been talked about for 5 years. Then I'll switch back to CRYCO. I had nothing but them up until 1987. |
