cut springs

Ok, I recently acquired a 95 Mazda 626 LX. Yeah I know this is the honda forum (I still got my 89 accord), but I figured you ppl would be the most knowledgable about this. I have been lookin at the intrax springs for my ride and the drop is only 1.7in. I am lookin for more @ least 2-2.5. A local performance shop (Wicked is the name of the place if anybody lives in the Broward area of S. Fla) said that the only way to lower the car anymore was by cutting the springs. 1st off doesn't that really screw up your ride and handeling. 2nd won't it cause your tires to wear faster?

Is it possible for a good shop to properly lower the car with a custom coilover setup?

ok, there are several solutions if you want to lower more, but you have to specify your intentions with the car, you could get coilovers, you could get hydro's, you could get air bags, or you could cut the intrax springs to your liking..... of these options i would favour the coilovers or cutting the intrax springs....

i know people will flame that cut springs is ghetto, and indeed it is ghetto to cut stock springs.... but i have eibach sportlines and i decided to cut the front springs an additional half inch and now it looks tight and hasn't resulted in any loss in ride quality

as for accelerated tire wear, it will happen if you really slam your ride, but if not then it's not a huge issue. hope it helps

as far as my intentions for the car, the lowering is part of entire suspension upgrade, I already have the front and rear strut tower braces and the shocks I am gonna use are the Tokico Illuminas. I can't afford an airbag setup and personally I don't like hydros. Can u explain how I could get a coilover setup made cuz the guy at the shop said it can't be done if they aren't made for that car. Otherwise I will just end up cutting the intrax springs.

i would just cut the intrax springs about another inch or so...so it will make it a 2.7" drop instead. The ride quality wont be much different than the 1.7".

or you could get springs and take them to a shop, and they could find/make an adjustable perch, coilover sleeves are pretty basic, just a spring and a perch that compresses the spring which lowers the car, so since you already have the spring you just need a perch

gee... why did i buy these damn Teins when all i had to do was cut the springs on my car?

screw the engineers. they dont know shit compared to the folks at AF forums.



anyways... cutting springs changes the spring rate. unless you have precision machinery, it's gonna be tough to maintain constant spring rate amongst all four springs. plus, heating the spring will change change it's capabilities.

why not buy some Koni yellows? they have an adjustable spring perch that allows you to change the ride height in 3 different positions, one of which includes 1" lower.
