Has anyone actually worked on their abs?

I have a 1995 Grand Am GT and it has a Delphi Chassis ABS VI system. I have 220,000 miles on it and haven't paid too much in repairs. I have been very happy with the car. Today I was told the rear motor of the abs system wasn't working and to start with I needed to replace that motor but that doing that is only the first step. That there may be more problems after that is resolved. That the scanner will only give one problem at a time. I could end up having to replace the entire unit. The motor costs $385, and the unit is another $800. And it is my suspicion that I need a new master cylinder. With all that said, I have read that you need a scan tool to clock the system down and relieve the tension on the gears inside the unit before messing with it. I was wanting to open it up and see for myself if there was something that I could do on my own rather than pay someone else. Has anyone had any experience with this. Almost sounds like it would be cheaper to buy a new master from a non-abs GM vehicle and get rid of ABS all together. Much safer than ABS. I have not worked on my own or any other ABS system yet, but from the sounds of it, if I got this right, the motors preload themselves to be ready for action. I didn't think that they worked that way. I wish I could help you out. Maybe someone on here might know about this.

Abs is not something that most of us care to deal with. It is so complicated that unless you have been specifically trained to work on these systems you are better off to take the car to a mechanic. If you need to replace the ABS system you might think of looking for a used system. More cost effective and given the mileage on your vehicle you may not want to invest a large sum on the car at the present time. I don't recommend that you remove the system entirely.
