Why do you want to swap an engine into that thing anyways?

Oh well- to be blunt depends what your goign to drop in. Another 4a engine would be the easiest since it should mount in easily enough, the later models will be easier as well since they were usign in FF vehicles anyways. Id reccomend a 4agze changed to a 4agte, pump it up to about 12 psi, get a good intercooler, youll be looking at some serious power.

Issues when dealing with engine swaps: Fuel delivery, engine mounts (4a swaps wont be a problem since the block is the same), drivetrain issues, ecu, wiring, "plumbing", etc.

Re: 4afe?

i have the same car... 1990 toyota corolla four-door sedan. That thing is so weak. I don't have enough money, time or knowledge to do an engine swap in this car. But I was wondering what are some good ways to help get everything better in tune, and have it pump out some more power. I know it's an old car and nothing should be done to it, but I've gotta start tuning cars somewhere.

P.S. I'm a newb to most of the parts, except for the popularly known ones, like an intercooler.

Re: 4afe?

the best way to net more power/cheapest methods is to do a 4agze swap or a high comp 4age swap

just swap out the bottem ends of either motor(and supercharger form the gze) and you will immidetly net more power

f heads flow diffrently from a g head
expect a 5-10% hp loss
expect a 10-15% tourqe increase

when you use the f head instead of g head you lose a good amount of peak Hp but gain alot more toure, its a lot steadier of a tourque curve and comes alot faster than a G head

Re: 4afe?

the lower half of the motor, from the bottem of the head down (head gasket down), any block that comes with a F head, sucks, there weaker than a block that comes with a g head...

Re: 4afe?

So would changing out the bottom end help get rid of the areas where when you're driving, it just doesn't accelerate that well anymore?

Re: 4afe?

yes it would give you about 160 hp for the gze swap, and about 130-140hp for the high comp swap, and about 160-170 ft lbs of tw for the gze and about 140-150 for the ge swap...it will have mad tourqe on it

Re: 4afe?

no they made good heads on good blocks (4age, 4agze) and made okay heads on CRAP block (4afe, 7afe, 5afe)
everyone talks shit about the F head like its total crap, but to be honest its not that bad, yes you wont revv nearly as high or have the peak hp that a g head has, but ALWAYS expect at least a 1:1 ratio on Hp tq no matter the mods, any mod you do, FI bolt ones, head work will make your tourqe raise substantially.

and with a high comp 4age swap your comp will go up (dont ask me y it wil raise w a 4age and not a 4agze it just will) ive done an assload of reasearch and ive gbasically come to the conclusion that even thought the blocks are the same size and so should the deck height, on the high comp 4age the actaul piece of inner cylendar wall is slightly higher, so putting an f head on a 4age high comp motor will lower the deck height by a few millimeters upping the comp to about 11.5:1

theoretically none of this has been proven correct yet, and no one will know untill i finihs my 4afze swap...so only time will tell

Re: 4afe?

is there any cheap way to up the compression? such as getting a thinner head gasket? pistons are outa my range, and unless i can find a cheap g block, there doesnt seem to be any other way

Re: 4afe?

y would u want to up the compression anyway 11.5:1 is the highest compression you can run on standard 91 octane pump gas

and you would want lower comp on the 4agze, the lower the comp the more boost you could run
