If you had a choice....

Okay.. So I'm driving along when I see a porsche for sale two days ago. I drop by today to check it out... Here it is:

1987 Porsche 924 S Coupe 2D 5 spd manual, lthr, mroof nice, only 117k... that's all i got from it.. I'm going to check it out some time this week, but I thought i'd ask what should i be conscience about? Its going for $3k. I feel that I can easily sell my probe for $3,200, considering its in imaculate shape inside and out. Only two things that don't work on my car are: 1) Antenna is bent and broken, motor won't extend or retract and 2)Pump for the windshield washer fluid doesn't work. Both are easy/relatively cheap fixes that I'm just lazy to get around doing. Now. For the Porsche:

WELL... The car has been repainted... I can see where there was quite a bit of rust on the body under the new paint coating (random rough and uneven spots in the car pannel...) The whole interior is shot to hell. The engine seems to run "perfectly". I didn't notice hardly any flaws... (except acceleration is slower than my probe >_<) Idles fine at about 800rpms. Gas Guage is inconsistant (constantly moving between 1/4 and 1/2 tank line) Milage was about 120,000 miles. Right power window doesn't work. Took the car up to 120mph just to check stability, and it seemed to some "free play" in the steering after about 80 mph... Steering was kinda bouncier than my probe on the highway while just cruisin at 80, got even worse as i went faster (durrr :P) I'm not sure if thats just areo dynamics or if the suspension is just old. I think rear struts were replaced for one reason or another though... T-top was a bit tricky to get off as the electronic motors that release the back end are probably old. No rust on the undercarriage. Seems to me the clutch was very heavy (but this is the first porsche i've ever driven so I dunno if that's normal compared to "low end" sports cars...) Shifting was average. Not factory smooth but not too rough. headlights work, everything checks okay. No leaks from what I can tell... Hood release latch is broken (had to take a screwdriver to it...) Whatcha guys think for 3 grand? DEFINATELY needs interior work done to it... Exterior and performance seem to be promising. Would you trade in a 98% flawless '93 Probe SE (with 135k miles) in for a 1987 Porsche 924?

Re: If you had a choice....

Definitely keep the Probe. The Porsche 924 was to the 80's what the 914 was to the late 60's and early 70's... a poor-man's Porsche. The average Joe could get one so he felt like a rich man (The 924 was selling for 18,ooo to 25,000 at a time when the 911 was selling between 40,000 to 65,000), and looked like a bunch of left over parts from the 928 and 944 were tossed together to make something to just get rid of. Parts are over priced and harder to find. You'll definitely have a much better time with a Probe than a 924. Now if it was a 928...

Re: If you had a choice....

Awesome.. I didn't get the porsche.... it's only worht about 1,300 (if that), and they wanted 3k for it.. screw that..

But now i've got a dag dent on my front left quarter pannel... GDI..... That sux :/ Only dent on the car... (about 2-3 feet long just above the tire well) How much would that depreciate the value of my car?

Gotta be the age and driving record. I'm 31, married, and both wife and I have clean records (for me, it's just cuz I aint been caught yet! ). We pay $35 per month on our Probe, and $39 per month on my Ranger cuz it's the primary vehicle on our policy. Stay outta trouble and don't hit anything, and you'll see a drastic decrease in premiums by the time you're 25.
