clunk that common?
i keep seeing threads about the clunk in the drivetrain. i must be one of the lucky ones, i have 56,000 miles now on my 02' and no clunk as of yet. my question is this clunk something that developes over time and many miles or is it something that showed up early. also when is this clunk heard most times, what are the circumstances surrounding this sound? is it during acceleration, hard acceleration, braking, lifting foot off gas and coasting...etc. and is it a very loud you wont miss it the clunk, or relitively quiet that may not be heard with ozzy crankin? just seems as though this is a very common in this forum and i am just wondering if it something inevitable or not.

Well i don't know if what seems to be starting on my truck is the famous clunk or not but on mine it is more of a thump when accelerating away from a stop. It has to be a complete stop not almost stopped. It seems to do it all the time and is more of a bump felt rather than any kind of a clunk, it almost feels like something is loose and moves maybe about an inch or so upon acceleration. For all i know it could be the box of gravel that i have in the back moving a bit , 300 lbs moving an inch will tend to make a bit of a thump. I will investigate into this a little more , maybe take the weight out of the truck and take it for a spin and se if it is still there or not. by the way my truck has almost 91,000 km on it and this just started happening. Will investigate a little further and keep you guys posted.

You guys are some lucky guys....I am quite jealous....I have so many clunking noises...that you can't count...there is a noise form the rear end, the yoke (have installed the nickel plated yoke and greased the hell out of it, ii grease it and then it keeps quiet for like 4 days...and then again...clunk... also, another clunk from the transmission or transfer case....Sooner or later, you'll get lucky....!

Silveradoking, it sounds like you have been driving my truck! Hahahah seriously i had the new yoke put in, TransCase had 9 errors in computer had to have that reprog'd and I still have the infamous clunk. Im almost used to it, just sucks having that on an 03. Still love the truck just some quirks I could do without you know.
I had a bunch of stuff done for free under warranty by dealer. If you have any problems check the bulletins released by GM.

Well i have an update and it is a good one. My Silverado does not have the clunk, it was just the way the box of weight i had in the back was iced in there. Snow has been gone for a while now as has the weight in the back of my truck, but i forgot about theis post till now lol.

I took it to the dealer and was told, after they inspected it, that I needed a new transmission!!! ($2,700.) It seems that the Retaining Cover had come off the 4th gear overdrive and had damaged everything!! They were really great and helped me out because they contacted GM and got them to replace the transmission even though my truck had been out of warranty for over a year. (I only had 30,230 miles on it.) It now runs great with no banging, hitting or clunking..........I can't say that this is everyones problem, but it would be worth looking into. If the retainers have been installed improperly it may only be a matter of time before they come off and you could have a major problem.
