1995 Fiesta steering

Hi can anybody please help as i have a problem with my vehicle.
every now and then my steering wheel goes really stiff and when you turn a corner, the steering wheel will not centralise properly.
i have checked the tyre pressures and tyres and they are ok.


somedays the steering is fine and on other days i am having to fight with the steering wheel, it feels like something is sticking...

Try to keep it nice. Perhaps all the people that viewed your post don't have the answer, just like you.

I assume there is no power steering on your car, if I am right.
Then check the following hopefully while the problem is there.

Jack up the front, Remove tires, remove tie rods from knuckle/spindle but do not turn them on the inner steering arms, that way you won't throw out the alignment.
Then by hand turn each wheel left and right, compare the left to the right side. What your checking for is a siezed ball joint or strut mounts.
Both sides should turn freely.
If you find they are siezed, there is your answer, if free you may have a problem in your rack.

dont know if you have sorted this problem but i have done alot of fiestas where the uj on top of the steering rack has siezed its not a hard job to change. it makes the steering go tight then slack as you turn the corner. hope this helps

Does the steering sometimes go the other way and go "hyper-sensitive," or have you noticed and 'wallowing?'

I have recently had the same kind of problem. The sterring doesnt re-center itself and pulls me to the left side of the road and the steering wheel jerks constantly. I took it to a garage this morning, and they jacked it up and saw that where the wishbone meets something else (there is like a circular joint) and the joint has actually split. This has caused the left side of my car to wear away the inside of my left tyre, so much so that it was below the legal limit and would have cost me 3 points if i had been caught. Anyways, they changed the tyre for me and that stopped the problem straight away. trying to work out if its cheaper just to replace the tyre every few months until Xmas when it will prob fail MOT and get thrown away or invest £150 into getting wishbone parts replaced.

I've just read what sounds like the exact same problem I have. I know it's not my tyres only 1 week ago I had my tracking done where they discovered my cv gater had gone so I've had that changed and had new valves put onto my tyres as they had gone(as i found out on my first trip down the motorway and 2 flat tyres later!!!!!!) So i'm sure they would have noticed if my tyres were worn.

So I'm wandering what the problem could be? Is it safe to drive?

I would advise you to go to a good alignment shop and get bad parts replaced and a wheel alignment. Bad tire wear also increases fuel consumption with todays fuel prices this is expensive.
If you can replace the parts yourself Auto Zone and Advanced Auto loan tools. Then get an alignment when done. If these parts break it also will cause a bad accident and raise your rates.

I havin same problem with my fiesta mk3 i took it to a garage other day and asked what it was they told me that it was a universal joint at the bottom of the steerin colom i fitted it my self it took a couple of hours but work properly now i is due to ford poor design
