Hey
I am looking to put a sound system in my car, a head unit and 4 speakers. For the most part, head units are 4 channels, each around 20 watts RMS and 50 watts peak. What would be an ideal speaker setup to go with this, since the speakers are rated higher? The sizes I need are 4X6 and 6X9. Whats a good recommendation? Thanks. |

Re: whats watts?
I find Pioneer makes great speakers for the money. You can probably find a good set of two or three-ways in both sizes for a reasonable price, and they sound decent. That, and they're by far the easiest brand to work with when fitting speakers in factory locations.

Re: whats watts?
Do you have to use coaxials? It would be much better to do a component system....at least in the front. And I don't know how much bass your looking for, but without a subwoofer there won't be much.

Re: whats watts?
Imaging is the biggest.... also component systems are generally etter quality then coaxials.

Re: whats watts?
A component system is basically the coaxial speaker (6.5"speaker) plus another smaller speaker like 3" with a crossover. Splits up the duties of a regular speaker to make it sound better. However component systems cost more usually and labor to install them almost doubles. Not to be mean but what kind of cheap radio are u using if it only pushes out 20 RMS. I hope that was a type-o or u just dont know, which is ok if u just dont. Pioneer is good but if there are some infinity speakers for the same price range pick those up instead. Most importantly, when u go buy them take a CD that u listen to alot and listen to it on a CD player that is the same price range as yours in ur car and listen to both set of speakers. At this point tell the speaker salesman to get the hell out of the room cuz he will trick u into thinking one sounds better. Make up your mind and then ask him/her which one he/she likes better. I used to work in car audio so I know how they think. Anyways hope that helped.

Re: whats watts?
I want to know what cd players you're looking at that do more than ~20rms per channel. The most I've seen is 26rms from the V-Drive Alpines, other than the claimed 60rms from the Panasonics that's a physical impossibility as far as I'm concerned.
A component set is like a coax set except instead of the tweet being mounted along the same axis as the mid (co-axial -> coax), it's a free unit that you can mount wherever you like. There are a few advantages to component sets: 1 - there's no hole in the midbass taking away cone area 2 - tweet can be mounted wherever it suits you best, if you like them pointed straight at you then point them straight at you, if you like them pointed at the windshield then point them at the windshield, you can use some tape to determine where you like them best before hand and then just mount them there when you decide on a location 3 - because components are essentially better right from the start because of the reasons listed above, companies focus all of their time and money on advancing the component sets. The coax sets are more of a side thought, they just throw them out there to please the people who don't really care much about sound, they just want a replacement for stock.

Re: whats watts?
these guys are right, even the highest quality h/u average around 20wrms. think about it. how small is the amp inside of a h/u? its smaller than a pack of cigarettes. not getting a lot of power from that.
