Weird sound coming from my wheels

Hey guys whats up? I have a big annoying problem with my car. Okay so when i steer the wheel left or right about 35-45 Degrees, the car makes this weird sound. It also makes this same sound when im driving on the highway and i turn the steering wheel just a bit to change lanes. It sounds almost like a fat ass getting off the leather seats or imagine some kind of scraping sound. Thats the best i can describe it. Anyway, i was thinking it might be my springs? Maybe they need a little lubricant? Well, any suggestion will help. -Ray

2G lower laterall link balljoints will make a creaking or groaning sound sometimes when turning the wheel. They are the ones that are recalled. I posted a procedure on how to quickly test the balljoints. I'm a bit tired now after work, give a quick search and see if you can't find it that way. Use my username in the approriate box to narrow it down.

BTW, anyone can inspect thier own balljoints, and I would seriously recomend everyone go take a look. Some poeple dont find out they're bad until the tire is facing in the wrong direction, and things get ugly.

JAck up the front of the car. The balljoint in question is on the "Lower Lateral Link," the straight arm coming out from the front "K member" to the knuckle. Use a prybar or a helper or something to lift the tire not far (1/2" will do), but abruptly. On a lift, use your shoulder to jerk the wheel upward. If the knuckle goes up without that arm a noticeable amount, the joint has failed. Spec limit is around a 10th of a mm, IIRC, but its been a while so that could be off a bit.

Okay so after checking to see if i have this recall, what do i do about it? What is the cure? Can i take it to my personal mechanic or do I have to take it a mitsubishi dealer? I hate going to the dealership.

I got mine replaced at a mechanic. I then found out about the recall. Im scheduled to take it to the jeep dealership on wednesday, get new ball joints, and then they're reimbursting me my $400 back. I cant complain. This is great because I got bnew control arms and joints, and now getting newer joints... all for free. I love it

Recalls are always free for as long as you own the car. Goto a Jeep dealership and check to see if the recall was done. If not, schedule, and get it done. It'll be free.

Okay so i just called the mitsu dealer and they sai that the ball joint recall has been done...IS there any way it can be done twice? I dont know what to do.

If that is the problem and the recall has already been done on your car your kinda shit-outta-luck...
you'll just have to pay to get it fixed or do it yourself....

My understanding is that recalls have to be performed as long as the car is still on the road. Meaning that if the ball joints are the problem, the Satan still has to replace them even if they have been done before. I would take the car by your normal mechanic (unless you know how to check the ball joints) and have him/her verify that it is indeed the BJ's. Then you can go to the dealer with a better idea of what the problem is.
