Help with smoke!!!!! Did compression test.

Ok...have an 88 4dr, dx, 1.5L FI, odo reads 161k.....smokes like crazy!!!

I did a compression test and came up with 182-185 on all cylinders dry. Added oil and all cylinders went up to 270 with the exception of one that was 245....maybe put less oil in that one...

This car is new to me so not sure what the history is on the head or bottom end.

Car smokes just a little at start up...blue...definately not running rich as plugs are burning perfectly....at high rpms though...smoke billows out of this thing....

I know heavier oil will help but more interested in fixing the problem...

What are all your professional thoughts on this one??????

Re: Help with smoke!!!!! Did compression test.

if you have a napa and they are as good as the one around here, take the top half off and have the top end reset, not a whole lot of $$ bit of work to get to, but it should fix the problem

Sounds like you might need to get a head rebuild. Or atleast new valve seals and get your guides checked to see if their worn out. If your compression is good, the oil isnt getting into the combustion chamber through the rings, its most likely coming through the valve guides.

wet test?

What do you think about getting 245-270 on the wet test?

Re: Help with smoke!!!!! Did compression test.

you get that high because liquids dont compress so its like adding more dome onto your piston so you get more compression

Is it likely that the problem is with the cylinder head? I was surprised to get 180's with 161k on the clock....

Re: Help with smoke!!!!! Did compression test.

i would assume its the valve stem. a leak down test would help solve what the problem is
