Question about gear settings...

well, im just about to turn 16 and a few months back i bought a 79 camaro and i love it. but about a week ago i took it on the interstate for the first time, and the rpms are really high ( about 3200 going 65 in 4th gear) and i was wondering if there is anyway i can change it so that its not so high (without buying a new transmission). Thanks...

Re: Question about gear settings...

lower ratio gears, but your acceleration will suffer. Or maybe a tune up could help if it's been a while

Re: Question about gear settings...

yeah i would check the plugs and wires and make sure the car isnt working harder than it needs to be before u go messing with the gears. unless u wanna throw some different one's in anyways but im not sure where your car should be at rpm wise at cruising speed i think mines is a bit close to 3grand or at it at 80 or 90 in 5th ( i think) i dont look when im driving but i dont have stock so i dont know what the norm is 4 your car

Re: Question about gear settings...

ok i was doing 80 today and saw that it runs at 2400rpm's i decided to take a look, the other reason why i never payed attention to the meter is because when it matters the most i cheat, i have a small ass shift light ( about pen size) thats smack dead in the middle of my gauge cluster....if u look real close in my pic u can see it, it has a yellow cover over the lense.

Re: Question about gear settings...

the way to change that is to swap to an overdrive tranny, or put in a lower set of rear gears.

What transmission do you have in it right now? and what size rear tires? you can calculate the current rear gear ratio from that, and also decide what gear ratio you would need to be liveable on the street.

Re: Question about gear settings...

i think those come factory with the th-350, just a 3-speed (not 100% sure)... if so, better option is to change trannys instead of gears.
