Hinge Pin won't budge

Iv'e never tried to take one out but the one I have on my 68 will not move! Whats the recommended procedure? Im trying to remove it to put in an older style mirror / mirror pin on it. If I cant get I'l just cut the new pin an weld it to the hinge but I prefer not to.

After 37 years those things have a tendency to not want to come out. Soak it for several days with a good penetrating oil, working the door back and forth to get the oil down into the hinge.

If it's really stuck, an air hammer may be the only way to remove it. BTW, they come out up, from the bottom.

There is a kit available with the new pin(s) and a reamer to smooth out and size the hinge so the new pin will fit snug.

Make sure that the threaded pin will work with your doors and hinges. I don't remember ever seeing those types on the later Bugs (68+), and may only work on '67 down.

I put the pin with the threads on it in my '71 Super Beetle, both drivers and passenger side. Three of them came out fine, the drivers side top did not, I ended up drilling it out, but...DON'T DO IT!!! I couldn't keep it straight and the doors hangs low. Now I need to replace the hinge (which might be a consideration if you can't get yours out).

Thanks guys. I think Im going to weld it along the inside fold of the hinge and forget about getting it out.
