Question Vtec-e...

I was wondering if I could put a vtec-e head on my D15B jdm block...and what is your guys opinons of the "three stage" vtec, would it be worth it? How much does a good condition vtec-e head run? You guys are a lot of help. Thanks!

BTW I'm building this car for economy..but when I press on the gas it needs to go..that why I was thinking three stage.

Re: Vtec-e...

the E at the end of it stands for economy. I think the work economy speaks for itself.

sorry I forgot to add I was building for economy (probably the opposite of what most people do, lol) would it be easy to mate a vtec-e head to my 1.5L block..would I go with one from a civic HX 1.6? Or would I have to get the JDM one that they put on the cars over there for the 1.5? Is it as easy as taking the old one off and bolting the new one on (and keep the DPFI and distributor?) and then just making a switch for the vtec-e?

The bottom end on my D15 has less than 40k miles, I'm looking to keep it. Can anyone answer my question?

Re: Vtec-e...

You'll need to the ECU to get it to work correctly.
This may help a little: http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/sohcvtec.html

there arent any dpfi vtec engines. to have that would take money and time and it would definately not be worth it.

Re: Vtec-e...

it would be the same as what is called a mini swap, except you would use the vtec-e head and you would have to re-wire for OBD1. As someone sugested, if your not good with wiring an HF drivetrain should give you similiar MPG, but a lot less power, but it would be an easier install (same OBD generation). But I think the Vtec-E engine would be better, more drivable (more power), but still get a great MPG number....

Don't listen to those who say its not worth it, if you drive a lot of miles, and you like your car, its definitly worth it (assuming you do the labour yourself), and the savings will show themselves...

thanks for you help, and everyone else. I have a friend who can wire me up with ODB1, but I'm wondering about the head itself. How would I go about getting one that doesn't need to be rebuilt for a good price? Also, I've heard before the VTEC heads have special oil "holes" in the head for the valvetrain changing mechanisms. Since I have the D15B that the head originally comes on, would it be a direct bolt on? Thanks.

Also this engine provides a power boost and an economy boost...my engine is rated for 94Hp and 35mpg, while with the 3 stage head it can produce 128Hp and 54Mpg..impressive.

Re: Vtec-e...

Ummm...what vtec-e head are you refering to? If you're refering to the VX engine, then it's a 90hp engine and would give you no benefit in doing that swap.

Re: Vtec-e...

If you are wanting to do this swap, I have a VTEC-e cylinder head sitting in my garage right now. It's complete with the solenoid, egr valve, injectors, fuel rail, and everything. It is an obd2 head, but would also run on obd1. If you're interested, email me at [email protected].

I agree with Viper that it would definitely be worth it, considering the prices of gas these days!!!! I drive a 3.0L turbo supra on a daily basis, and believe me I have considered going back to a 1.5L honda for the gas mileage! you wouldn't believe the difference in money that I put into those extra two cylinders!!

Re: Vtec-e...

is the head you are selling a 3 stage??
the VX VTEC-E engine is only 90hp that is correct, but the 3 stage is 128hp because of the regular SOHC VTEC like what's on the Y8 head, but 54mpg like the VX head. The 3 stage has 2 solenoids not 1.

It's only found on the EK-series JDM Civic, Civic Ferio VTi/Vi

I gotcha I didn't read it right. I read you talking about obd1 but I haven't read the rest of the thread over again.

sounds like a pain in the ass for not much pay off.. why not just get a hf engine and trans like the person said before..I'm sure you could get them dirt cheap.

Re: Vtec-e...

well lets see here.... for one, he didnt ask "should i buy an HF engine and tranny". Unless you have something to add to the topic at hand, please dont say anything at all. Its like someone making a thread about "which should i get, a b16 or a b18" and someone answering, "none, stupid, get a v8".

If you want to build for economy, sure the VTEC-e setup is great. You can run it OBD0 just like a mini-me setup, you'll just need some sort of rpm activated switch.... If you had the 3 stage VTEC, you would need 2 rpm activated switches. Yes it can be done.
