Re: 99 Ticking noise
When do you hear the ticking noise? After a cold start? It's most likely just a lifter tick. Our pneumatic lifters take a while to get the oil all the way up to them (it's especially worse when cold because oil is much thicker), and until it gets to them, they tick. If it is just a lifter tick, there's nothing to worry about.

if it only does it while your driving, might be a bearing.

Re: 99 Ticking noise
Yeh, that'd be more of a grinding / chugging sound. Sandman, could you be more specific as to when you hear the sound / how it behaves in relation to your speed / rpm / engine temp?

Re: 99 Ticking noise
Click click click click, I'll bet you have a dual overhead cam quad 4? Like ridenour said, lifters will tick, and varies depending on driving habits. I've owned two different makes of DOHC engines and the only reason I can think of as to why the ticking is much more apparent on these engines is because DOHC for one have more lifters which equals more of them making the noise and second the lifters are located right on top of the engine as opposed to being buried in it's belly where the noise becomes more muffled as in the case of non-overhead cam engines. HTH

Re: 99 Ticking noise
^ ^ Right on marc - that's most likely what it is, Sandman
Sandman, is it possible it might even just be a component of your dash rattling? A while back, I thought I had a bad bearing that I was hearing at idling, except I slammed my hand down on top of my dash above my instrument cluster, and the rattling sound stopped - so apparently it was just something loose in the dash. |

Re: 99 Ticking noise
It may be something you just have deal with, I haven't heard of any fixes for the dreaded "click". If you come across something let us know.

I'm having the same problem with my 99 Grand AM SE 4 ltr. V6.
It will tick like mad when I first start it up. After I drive for a while the ticking will subside and eventually stop. It's very LOUD on starting. Generally only happens when it's cold outside. I have really noticed this moreso lately than before. Should I be concerned. Is there something else I should be checking to make sure it's not the actual engine ready to blow? Thx |

Re: 99 Ticking noise
^ ^ It's most likely a combination of lifter tick and piston slap - this is common when it's cold outside. I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: 99 Ticking noise
what oil filter are you using, some of the cheap filters like fram and what not that most of the quick oil change places use cause louder engine sounds. If you are using a cheap filter like fram and the like, i would try an AC delco filter, they usally get rid of some of the noise.
