Turbos!!!!

Has anyone bought the rebuild kit for our stock turbos from 3sx and try to do it themselves? Think It is possible to do? Everytime I rev my engine when the rpms come back down a oil smoke cloud comes from my front turbo. Im assuming this is very bad. Im considering buying the kit and rebuilding it myself. Any tips?

Re: Turbos!!!!

i bought the rebuild kit and did my back turbo 9000miles ago and it has been fine but you must make sure you have no shaft play or scuffing marks on the inside of the compressor or it will be a waste of money. also before you take the turbo apart, you must mark it up someway so you can put it all back together in exactly the same place or you will need to get the turbo balanced again and that is obviously extra cost. i used one of the compressor wheel blades with a blob of paint and aligned it up with the compressor housing paint mark i had made. you must mark up the front and back half of the turbo not just one end!!!!!
it is also advisable to thoroughly clean the inside of the turbo and remove all of the coke build up you get on the compressor wheel spindle or it will not spool freely on the new brass bushes. you must also use a very very thin oil to bulid it up so it is nice and lubricated. finally dont forget to clean your oil lines and fill the turbo up with oil manually or you will get nasty noises coming from it on initial start up and it can cause immediate damage to the turbo again.
