Question CD changer/CD Player??

I have a 1998 Grand Prix w/ a tape player with steering wheel controls. I found a factory CD player for $100 but I've heard there are alot of problems installing them like stereo lights not working, and getting CD players that are locked up (theft feature). How hard is it to replace??
My other plan was a CD changer. Do you have to have a certain kind??? How hard are they to hook up??

First of all, whenever you buy a used Delco player, you run the risk of burnt out bulbs and locked codes. Just make sure you understand the return policy before you buy.

Since your current unit has a cassette player - which is considered a slave unit - you have many options for a CD changer. In addition to the units available from Delco, you can install any changer. Just be sure you have something like this.

If you opt to switch out the HU as well, be sure it has an IR remote and you can retain steering wheel control with this.

Ease of installation depends on you and your product. It could run from something as simple as plug and play to custom fabrication.

Have always had a CD player in my GP's, so I never had this trouble.
I don't see GM coming up with different wires for these radios. There's enough junk under dash. And seeing that the wires are prtty standard, I don't see troubles.
Here's how you unlock radio;
** Theftlock Bypass

1. Press and hold presets 2 & 3 for about 10 seconds until the first 3 digits of the display code are displayed.

2. Write the numbers down.

3. Press the AM/FM button, write down the next 3 numbers.

4. Call 1-800-537-5140, when asked, enter 620529, press the # button and enter the 6 digit code from the radio, you will get an unlock code, write it down.

5. Go back to the car, press the HR button and set the first 2 numbers, then press minute button and set the next two last numbers, press AM/FM button, SEC should be displayed, turn on radio.

To remove customers code, repeat step 5. you should see --- on radio face, the code is now out of the radio.

EDIT: Updated with new dealer code. FWIW, the old code was 202107

Should be able to call any shop that does radios and find out about everything else.

Good luck

Re: CD changer/CD Player??

Could you tell me how much one of those plug kits for a changer would run?? And how much do the IR remotes run?? I figured they were high, but the factory CD Player I found for $100 is at a salvage yard so there is no warranty. I don't care what kind of CD player I have. I just don't want to lose the steering wheel controls... Thanxx

Both of the adaptors run $55-60 each. I don't believe there are any IR remotes for factory changers. That option is only in the aftermarket units.

Re: CD changer/CD Player??

Here's the light fix. I would do this before you install. You can thank Big-l for this;

Also, I think that radio should hook up and work. The 98 GTP should be a plug and play.

Re: CD changer/CD Player??

Do you have the radio with the 7 band EQ or the bass/treble ? I bet that there is a factory harness already installed in the trunk,as far as the wiring goes, check inside the trunk, on the passenger side, towards the top,behind the carpet.

Moring Larry,

Thought I would have heard from you. Blow the motor up on the car Friday, at a "fun match".
New one going in as we speak. Trying to make up my mine if I'm going to add all the stuff back to it. It turned some great times, till the END.
