Guess Who- The Quote Game

Can anyone guess who said this? Let's make it fun...guess BEFORE you cheat, Google and pretend you knew the answer all along.

"Of course the people don't want war. But, after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, it's easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Who said this? "I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it." "They told stories that at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country."

Which by the way turned out to be a lie!

Assuming these are famous people all of us have heard of... I would guess one of Hitler's guys. Maybe Weinhard Hydrich(sp?) or Goebles?

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks."
Hint- late 18th century.

The next two are from one person:
"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."

"Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."

Re: Guess Who- The Quote Game

Touche, Snoopis. In both cases- your quotes and mine, it is the character and position of the man in history who give them weight.

Cody- how very interesting that you would immediately assume (as I infer from your Kerry quote?) that this is attributable to someone in the Bush administration. I wonder how many people would think the very same thing upon reading it? So is that your guess?

Umm no, the bombing of Vietnam (Operation Rolling Thunder) actually utilized more bombs than the US did in WWII. Check me on it, I dare you. If there is any doubt, watch Fog of War and hear McNamara say it himself.

Also, RSX has a point, did you immediately assume it was someone related to Bush?

My guess Cody would be Teddy Roosevelt, despite the fact that it most likely is not (consider his reference to communist dictatorship) it just sounds like it. It also reminds me of the New York Publisher who during the Spanish American War said "supply me the story, and I'll supply you the war". But yeah, who was it?

Answer:

HERMANN GORING AT THE NUREMBERG TRIALS

But it very well could have been Rummy or Georgie, couldn't it? THAT is scary.

Re: Re: Guess Who- The Quote Game

My first quote was Thomas Jefferson, the other two were Friedrich Nietzsche.

You could say that about any leader during war or other time of "crisis." The scary part is that it's true, regardless of who is saying it.

Re: Guess Who- The Quote Game

Cody that was John Kerry- Jane Fonda's buddy.

"the bombing of Vietnam (Operation Rolling Thunder) actually utilized more bombs than the US did in WWII." Kid, if you woulda been there you wouldn't have thought it was half enough.
