many questions....

hi all.... i'm so glad i found this place.... i've been looking for a good forum for a week now... i bought a 1987 nissan 200sx and it needs some work... this car is to get me to and from work mainly....
i guess i'll start the the main things... i have the chilton's repair manual... but i know (almost)nothing about cars... lol.. i can fix airplanes, but not cars....

anywho...
i was getting about 3500rpm and it would not go more than that... i changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter (nasty stuff came out... lol), and nothing.... but today i changed the distributor cap & wheel, and BAM! 6000+.

anywho... i have some more questions, anyone up for a good challange?? lol..

it starts bad, sometimes i have to hold the key turned for 3-5 sec... other times when i go to start it, it makes that sound like if it's already on and you crank it anyway, that scratching sound....

another thing is if i slam on the accellerator, it just slowly accelerates...

one more (main thing that i need to fix) is the the right head light doesn't work... all i get is high beam on it... i even changed the light, and i still only get the highbeam

sorry if too many questions... but i dont know how to go about this....

thanks,
RDmai0f

Re: many questions....

For the light, check the fuses, and one thing to try for the no-performance problem is to clean the MAFS, take it out and clean it with some q-tips and some carb cleaner.

Re: many questions....

BTW, the MAFS is the Mass Air Flow Sensor, it's that big ass thing in the middle of the intake tube.

Re: many questions....

those are mass air flow sensors. clean it and then drive your car to see if its fixed.. if that doesnt' work then there's a problem with it.. you could probably find a cheap one on ebay if you need a new one..
and about your light, its a 2-way bulb, which requires two different currents. i'm not sure where it is that the current changes from low to high beam but that may be where your problem is..

btw does anybody know where the fuse is for the daytime running lights?? (for those with drl's).. mine don't work but i need to take the fuse out to stop the signals from flicking really fast..

Umm...

Is it an automatic? If its an automatic sometimes the car will automatically decide that it would not be good to downshift for faster acceleration so it stays in 3rd gear and accelerates slowly through 2k-3.5k RPM..just FYI for ya
