Removing Engine Without Tranny?

Haynes says to pull manual tranny out with the engine...is this necessary on a 1988 1.5L FI with 5sp tranny? I would like to avoid removing the axles. Anyone with thoughts or experience with this?

Re: Removing Engine Without Tranny?

In a civic IMP it is sooooooooooo much easier to take it out together.
If you want to attempt to take it out w/o tranny you need to remove crank pulley all belt driven things a/c bracket, motor mount bracket and just do a lot of wiggiling. It has been done.
But even the HONDA service manual tells you to remove the tranny with it. Now come on if honda tells you to most likely that is the easiest way!

Re: Removing Engine Without Tranny?

Yeah when i was doing this to my integra I posted the same damn thread?
See searching would have helped!

Just pop axle bolt with a breaker bar and a pole (i used my trusty fence post 5ft!) and the bolt will pop right out. Then beat the hell out of the control arm to break the ball joint seal and pop those axles out. Its so much easier.
And besides it would be hard as hell to install a tranny while wiggling it aroung the engine!

Re: Removing Engine Without Tranny?

dont waste your time. just loosen the transmision mounts and the engine will tilt. no need to take off your crank pulley or anything the engine will just come right out.

9 times out of 10 that tears the boot up though.

I have tried to pull the motor without the trans once, and it was a pain in the ass. So I say pull them together.

Now, here is a question. Do you guys go out the top, or down through the bottom? I'm a bottom person myself.

Never tried the bottom but now that i think about it, it sounds easier. Cuz you always gotta tip it in at a nasty angle and level it in. from the bottom it will kindof just "drop out" basically.

Edit- would the radius rods or anything get in the way?
