wont shift

my 89 cavalier z24 will not shift and when it does shift it puts you back in the seat, do i need to replace the transmission or is there some other way i can fix it

auto or manny? has fluid? is the tranny fluid any other color than what it should be? any debris in the fluid or air bubbles or anything?

it is an automatic and it has fluid it is the color it is supposed to be no bebris or bubbles me and my dad just changed the fluid and the filter in it

89 cavalier z24

I had the same problem. I went to a dealer and they said to change the filter and the trans fluid and to make sure i was using the correct type. I had not been using the fluid that chevy had suggested in the owners manual. I change the fluid and the filter and have not had the issue since using the correct fluid seemed to slove my problem. hope this helps.
