Follow up to Clogged converter, Need your opinions

Hey guys,

I'm back with yet another question, this post is in continuation to my post of yesterday (3/11/05). After having the car sit again all day, Midas called at 8:00am this morning. After I changed the coil packs plugs and wires myself, I left the car with them because there was no change in the way it was running. It was still sputtering and spitting.

I get the call this morning and I'm told the following:

1. after staying at the shop until 8:00 ( this was B/S, I drove past the shop at 7:30pm and the place was closed uo nice and tight, but thats beside the point) last night and doing several diagnostic tests they have come to the conclusion that I have a bad ignition module.
***My question: Can the ignition module cause the poor running condition, and could the Ignition module go bad without tripping the OBDII, there was no SES light on. I told them that I want the old module back (I'm quickly loosing trust in Midas so I want proof)***
They are also going to do a " Fuel System Clean Out" which is OK with me. At 120,000 miles I'm sure the injectors could use a good cleaning.

For those who have responded to my thread from yesterday, first off "Thank you " secondly, Do you believe in what I'm being told, or should I still consider the Cat. Converter (My gut feeling),

Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks guys,
Dan

Have they checked the injectors for leakage?

Re: Follow up to Clogged converter, Need your opinions

Well, I just picked up the car and Damn if it isn't running great.[ knock on wood]. The mechanic at Midas sold me a used ignition module, the housing and a cover plate all for $70.00 (this was on the side because I told them I was not going to pay full price for their parts)[ I also made them give me the old parts, I was not going to play the I just tossed them out and the trash was just picked up game]. I did let them do a fuel injector cleaning and I had to pay some diagnostic time all in all I feel that the price of $136.00 + $70.00 was pretty fair and like I said it runs great. When I first joined the Forum back in Jan. 05 it was to get input on a hesitation problem when shifting out of 3rd and 4th gears. The work that was just done took care of that also. So to any one having some topend hesitation issues you may want to consider looking at the ignition module and having the injectors cleaned ( I wish I knew which actually took care of the problem or if it needed both], it has made a world of difference.

Thanks to all who gave their input, it did help to make sure I didn't let myself get ripped off.

Dan

It is very possible that the ignition module caused the rough running. I would keep an eye on the cat due to the fact that it was cherry red a couple of times. You may develop problems in the future.

Thanks GTP Dad, My first thought about that Cat. is the fact that it got cherry, the intense heat must of compromised the metal composition, it is now in perfect condition to develop rust. I know that it will rust out at some point. I am also concerned about melted guts, the mechanic could not tell by looking at it and tell me if it is honeycolm or beads, so now I have to watch for signs of a clogged cat in the future.

Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

Greg123, I figure that this is going to be my 15 minutes of fame. I guess everyone is entitled to a once in a lifetime deal, and I think I just got mine.
In all seriousness, the guys there did a great job on the repair, however I did have to pay in the way of time. It took them entirely too long to diagnose the condition. The car sat for 3 days waiting to be looked at. But that's not the fault of the mechanics.
