talon vs. hyundai (yea, kinda odd, I know)

Hey everyone!

Well, the cars that I look at just keep getting sold, so I'm still on the search for my perfect car.

Anyways, right now, I'm looking at a 95 Eagle Talon TSi (because of how fun they're supposed to be, and for looks) or some sort of hyundai (just for looks). On one hand, the Talon isn't supposedly the most reliable car out there, plus a lot of things supposedly get messed up often. On the other hand, Hyundais aren't known for their reliability either.

So, you might think that if both are reliable, I might as well go with the Talon, right? Well you see, the thing is that this car really, really cheap (1700). Considering that most cars like this go for somewhere around five grand, this doesn't seem to be a good sign.

So which do you think I should go for? Or should I just keep on the lookout?

By the way, this will be my first car, and um...yea.

well it depends on what year the hyundai is, if its older, i would go with the Tsi, and just baby it like crazy until you know you have money to fix it

I would have to agree. Depends on what year plus what model.

While the majority of consumers still think that Hyundai is not reliable, the company has turn itself around in the last few years and has produced quite a few reliable vehicles. They have been getting customer/reliability awards left and right. Now as for the original posters question, its all relative. What you might consider a perfect car others might not. It depends on what you plan on using it for. Daily commuting, racing (whether illegal or legal), just for show or over all almost a bit of do everything car.

The Eagle Talon is a average good vehicle, great looks and if I am not mistaken can be modified to be faster (don't quote me on that, you may have to check with the members over in the Talon section). As for the Hyundai counterpart, I would suggest a Tiburon. (Even though the Elantra GT and to a lesser extent the Accent are overall good vehicles as well.) The Tiburon is more sportier and can be modified to be faster. Note: the Hyundai vehicles can be fun and offer alot more value for the money but there are not that much aftermarket items for them like lets say a Honda vehicle has.

Regardless whether go with the Talon or the Hyundai, do have it checked out thoroughly cause you do not want to end up with a vehicle that will cost you more in the long run. I would probably go for the Tiburon, but everyone is different and every used car is too.

Hi again.

Alright, my first choice of a Hyundai would have been a Tiburon, but the problem is that I have a $2000 budget. Thanks anyways though.

Here are the hyundais that I'm looking at:

99 Elantra GL (1700)
97 Elantra GLS (1000)
96 Elantra GL (900)
00 Accent GS Hatchback (1500)
98 Accent (900)

Other than the Talon, I'm sort of leaning towards the 96 Elantra because of the color (silverish, as opposed to burgundy for the other Elantras), the price, and the looks (at least better than the accents).

I heard though, that Hyundai sometimes cuts back a lot on stuff like power windows and doors, and I really don't want to have to look stupid rolling up my windows/locking the car manually. Yea, kind of a pet peeve, but yea...

Anyways, now seeing the different cars, which do you guys think I should go with? Also, do you know if I would have any problems with a lack of stuff (power windows/doors) in any of these?

I do not want to risk turing this thread into a full blown comparison thread because we have a dedicated subsection just to do that. But I will write "whats on paper" and summarize the differences between these models.
Power
The Talon has 210hp as compared to 92 for the Accents, 130 for the 96/97 Elantras and 140 for the 99 Elantra. Power wise the Talon has a more powerful engine.
Fuel Economy
The Accents are better due to their smaller engine but not by much.
Safety
All the models above have driver and passenger airbags.
The 2000 Accent and the 96 Elantra do not have antilock brakes. The other models specified may have them as optionally installed items.
Crash test are average or better than average on all the models mentioned.
Roominess
All these models are very close in headroom, legroom etc.
Features
It seems that the 97 Elantra would have the Power door locks and windows which you desire.
