turbo charger question

ok I was looking at cardomain and I saw a guy with a single turbocharger and it had the double airfilters on the one turbo charger. I was wondering if I can do that or will it be to much air for it?

There no such thing as "to much air" when it comes to air filters. as long as you keep your mass air flow sensor on your car you can put ant type of filter that you can fit on there.

Re: turbo charger question

So does this mean it may run better with two filters on it?

Re: turbo charger question

Just use a nice big K&N style filter--no need for two. Look at the setups of the "fast guys" and you'll see that you don't need more than one filter

Brent Rau has his turbo mounted ram-air style, with a custom hood that scoops air right into the compressor housing, no filter at all Not a good idea for daily driving, though

Re: turbo charger question

Two would be hard to fit in our case. Check out my site for pics of a large filter. Its about 10 inches long, 7 inches in diamter (just fits), with a 4" connection, in my case. It was about 35 bucks at summit, they're all about the same price. Fit the largest filter you can. I had to cut my 4" intake pipe about 5" shorter to fit this thing. With a stock MAS you are limited to how long you can go. But the name of the game is surface area, doesnt matter which particular measurement you increase to get it

Edit> WTF is with all my editing tonight? So, if a 7" diameter filter will fit, even if its still only 6 or so inches long (not sure what that number is), and can be bought with a 3" inlet (to fit most of the round MAS adapters available), its better than the smaller cone type filters I see some kits coming with and I Would go for it.

Its the same principle as larger intake pipes. Turbos are pressure multipliers. Pre turbo restrictions provide a vacuum on the turbo inlet, which is another name for negative pressure. So your turbo needs to run at a higher pressure multiplication ratio (left line on compressor maps, go up, and you see efficiency drops) to get the same given boost pressure level. Freeing up preturbo restrictions is like lowering the boost. Less heat, less chance for knock, but more airflow to the motor.
