'96 Blazer LT 4wd Steering Problem

When in 4wd the steering is awful. Turning the wheel causes a low pitch droning and the car just does not want to move, you really have give it a lot of gas. Driving at speed it steers fine though, just no sharp turns.

Any ideas?

B.

Oh course you can't make sharp turn in a 4x4, that is normal. READ YOUR MANUAL.

Also, go get your transfer case, and your front and rear differential fluid changed.

Re: '96 Blazer LT 4wd Steering Problem

this is normal. the front wheels roll more than the rear ones while turning and since everything is locked together something has to give. hopefully the tires. don't drive in 4wd on dry pavement or you will break something or wear out tires

Re: Re: '96 Blazer LT 4wd Steering Problem

Just had the transfer case oil changed less than 500 miles ago.

I've had the car for more than 6 years, it seems to have gotten significantly worse in the past few months.

Thanks for the help though.

Ok, so that is one thing out of the three I suggested you change the fluid out of.

How about the differentials?

Again, binding is normal on dry pavement in 4wd... It's not good to constantly do that...

True, 4x4 should never be used on dry pavement.

Why anyone would need it then is beyond me.

Who said anything about dry pavement? I use 4wd for the snow up here in New England.

So to sum up: I've owned the car for 6 years and 4wd steering has gotten worse this winter, so less than 500 miles ago I changed out the fluids in the transfer case and both diffs, and third yes I know what 4wd feels like on dry pavement. By the way did I mention I know what 4wd feels like?

At this point then, try replacing your cv joints
