Unhappy 4 wheel drive wont work

We have a 1998 v6 Blazer. It has 3 buttons to select 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive hi and 4 wheel drive, low.

When we switch, it seems to click and clunk but a mechanic said it was not working. He showed us the front wheels staying still and the reat spinning.

I understand he said it might be a sensor orr switch under the car on the tranny that is bad? He said it all mechanically looked good (shafts turned etc by hand.)

Any info of things to check, we would appreciate.

THANKS.
