mini me problem

I have a 92 civic dx hatchback that I did a mini-me conversion and automatic to manual transmission conversion on. I installed the correct ECU. Now I am getting really bad spark knock. I tried 93 octane gas and adjusting the ignition timing. This only makes the knock better but does not eliminate it. It gets pretty bad in hot weather and at highway speeds. I know that the valve timing is off by half a tooth due to the differing heights of the vtec vs. the non-vtec head. Would an adjustable cam be able eliminate the spark knock (if so what degree should it be set on)? I was told that the knock may be to the increased compression. I could run racing fuel, which at $3-4/gallon is pretty expensive for a daily driver. Any suggestions?

IMPORTANT: Several places on the net and several people on Honda-Tech say that the VX (D15Z1) timing belt is the one to use for this swap because it is for a 1.5L VTEC. THIS IS INCORRECT! When I did the initial head swap, I used a VX timing belt. The VX timing belt was WAY too tight, and whined when the engine was at high rpm. I unfortunately did not discover this until the entire head was assembled. The VX timing belt has 103 teeth, where as the Z6 timing belt has 104 teeth, and the B7 belt 106 teeth. I was finally able to replace the VX timing belt with the Z6 timing belt, and the Z6 timing belt fit much better and didn’t whine. THE D16Z6 timing belt is the correct belt to use with a B7 block / Z6 head combination.
From a reputable site.

Re: mini me problem

Yah, I always thought the VX belt worked too, but I did some research since my friend wants to do the mini-me in his Del Sol and I found that.

Re: mini me problem

The belt is not the problem here. I used the z6 belt and it fits fine. The vtec heads sits at a little bit different distance form the crankshaft so it is off half a tooth. I do not know if this is the reason it is spark-knocking.

Re: mini me problem

I am unfamiliar with what a vx t-belt is. Could you please break it down for me.

Re: mini me problem

If I was to mill the head then the compression and temperature would be increased. Thus increased fuel pre-detonation and increased spark-knock. The vx belt is not the answer here. The distance between each tooth on the vx(d15z1), d15b7, d16z6 and the d16y8 timing belts are all the same. The difference is the number of teeth on each belt. If I were to have a larger belt then the tensioner would pick up the slack. Either way, the distance between the crank and cam will be a given number of teeth. Has anybody actually run into this problem
