Intro and maintenance questions on 96'

Hi all, new guy here, but not new to Hyundais. I've previously owned a 90 Sonota and just reciently bought my teenage son a 96 Elantra with only 58K miles. It's in great shape and and runs really well. He likes it allot. Unfortunately, I didn't get an owners manual with it. ( Have repair manual on order) Can anybody tell me what the recomended factory oil is for the 1.8l motor? also, if memory serves, my Sonota used oil and I suspect this one does to as it was low at purchase? Should I expect oil cunsumption?
lastly, how long do I have before i should really worry about the timing belt. is it reasonable safe to go 65-70K? I hate to put $400+ into it untill I'm confident that it will be relaible/good purchase.

Any other things i should watch for/ be aware of?

Your experience is appreciated!
Dave

I have a 96 elantra also. I don't know what kind of oil it uses (I let the man of the house take care of that) but mine uses oil too. When it runs low, my engine sort of clicks and we put in almost a quart. Maybe it is a Hyundai thing.

I just had a timing belt put on and it was at 80K miles. You should be fine for a while.

Also, you asked if there are other problems to be aware of...
see my post "Blinking engine light + other issues".

You can get the owners manual from the dealership at a nominal fee or even cheaper right off the net on ebay. See here.

I would check with Hyundai Webtech to see any technical service bulletins, recalls updates you may have not done on your vehicle as well you may want to look over the standardized schedule listings. Both are listed below. According to service schedule, it states to replace the timing belt at around the 90,000 mile service interval unless you are in California which should be at 60,000. (Why the difference in California, I have no idea). You may want to look at the older threads in the corresponding model subsection and see anything pertaining to the vehicle that has been brought up.
