Need Help on XTerra Jack and Jack stands

Hi,

I have heard scary stories about the jack stands failing. One fireman told, one person was found dead below the car when the jack stand failed.

I want to do some work in my 2000 XTerra, 2 WD, 6 Cylinder. I guess weight is appx 4500 lbs. I am not sure about the how much weight XTerra has.

can any one suggest me, based on their experience, what could be the best jack and jack stand out in the market. Can't make any compromise here. I saw Sears is selling craftsman for about 75 bucks for 3.5 ton capacity and with jack stands. Is this something to consider or I can get a better thing somewhere else...

2-ton capacity stands are sufficient, each one can theoretically support nearly the entire weight of the vehicle, but would never be called upon to do so.
The Craftsman ones are plenty good, I'd just avoid any super-cheap no-name ones.

I've got the Craftsman. If you watch for sales they often have a 3-ton floor jack and 2 stands as a package.

If I ever have a tire off the truck I usually put it under the frame or some other suitable location just in case a stand fails. You can also double up stands if you want.

I am getting craftsman soon. I will buy some extra chepo ones from walmart too, just in addition... .. I will have four jack stands + jack in place when I am under car.. and also the tires..
