Can someone please help me? I have a 1996 f150 with a 4.9 straight 6.
I am having problems starting it in the morning. I noticed that when i tap the gas pedal 1 or 2 times before i try to start it, it starts right up and for the rest of the day it starts fine. The truck sometimes die out in the middle of driving then i have a hard time starting it back up also. but, if i forget to tap the gas pedal then it seems like the fuel system gets flooded. I've changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs and coil pack. I even bought a Haynes manual which wasn't very much help to me. Has anyone ever had this problem before? can someone point me in the right direction. Is there a cold start valve? Is there a fuel ignighter? ![]() Aloha Troy

Re: 1996 f150 hard start when cold
Interesting. I've had the same hard starting in cold
weather for about 4-5 years now. I tried the other approach cuz the engine would only turn over slowly about 3-5 times before the dreaded "clicks". I've replaced the battery every year, new alternator, new starter, new cables. The battery checks good as does the charging system. A new, warm, fully charged battery on a jump (with or without the truck battery connected) gives the same results. I tuned it up a couple years ago, it only gets about 3000 miles per year (nowhere to go, so I don't.) It start very quickly in the summer. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary. What could I have missed? The "cold" I'm referring to is northern MN. It's OK above 15-20 deg, won't spin at all below 0. Thanks |
