How Much Is the Rarest McLaren?

I was just wondering. If the road going McLaren F1's go for about $1,000,000 then how much do the rare racing GTR's go for?

I think you will find that most F1 road cars sell for higher prices than any F1 GTR would. GTRs just aren't as usable, and although they had a spectacular run, especially their first year out - in the big picture of motor racing history they are merely a tiny blip on the chart and not extremely sought after by a large contingent of enthusiasts.

Actually the F1 LM is probably the most valuable of all McLarens. Several reports have LM3 being sold to Ralph Lauren for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.75 million USD, which might be a record for a McLaren F1 purchase price.

The rarest McLaren is actually the F1 GT (longtail roadcar) with only 3 examples including the prototype having been produced. McLaren retains possession of the prototype, but reportedly was offering it for sale at one million pounds just a few years back. At the time, that figure would have converted to about $1.5 million USD.

Have you ever heard the old saying: "When you've walked a mile in my (his) shoes, then you can criticize."

It's not like he had the thing crushed. Even Jay Leno said, "We don't really own these cars, we just keep them for the next owners."

I think we were quite lucky to have someone like Mr Selldorff own the LM for a few years. I'm sure he considers himself lucky as well, but I don't think there's any reason to openly criticize him for his decision to sell the LM.

Re: How Much Is the Rarest McLaren?

Besides from giving my critic to F.Selldorff for selling his piece of history I have absolutely nothing against him in any way. In fact I admire people like him who has made a name for themselves here in this world and are able to furfill their dreams.
F.Selldorff is clearly a great guy who takes his time to chat with us and share his experience this close, however I must be allowed to think he made a poor decision when selling his LM, especially after saying he never would so short time ago.
His reasons for doing this is his own and is none of my business, but I must be able to show my dissapointment over that a "true" enthusiast parts with the thing that must be automotive heaven!

Don't be so judgemental Mr.E, we don't mean things in the worst way possible all the time!

Re: How Much Is the Rarest McLaren?

O1R is the most valuable though it will never sell and the harrords car must be worth big bucks its all about the histror i see no reason why an F1 GTR with a great histroy wouldent be more valuable than an LM. In road trim they must be just as un usuable!

While I would agree that those are probably two of the most valuable examples of the F1 GTR, I still don't think that either would command a higher price than an LM. The fact that an LM is road legal and offers an extra seat as well as some comfort features over a GTR makes it much more usable and desirable to someone who isn't looking for simply a track-day toy.

Thorst - you are forgiven.

Re: How Much Is the Rarest McLaren?

There is no way an LM is worth more than O1R! There were 6 LM's in truth if the prototype longtail roadcar counts then so does XPLM in my book. Sory Peloton i have to disagree here 01R is worth far more than any outher F1 presumabley not even the Sultan of Bruniel could get hold of it hence his replica. LM's dont have racing histroy in the fulness of time you will be able to race them in historoic races which you wont the LM's leaving them very the track day toys! remember each LM celebrates a GTR from Lemans 95 not the outher way round. Worth more than 01R! I cant BELIVE you said that in time as GTR's hit the historic races there value will increase immensily LM's will look less and less usable they are after all just very good GTR replicas in essance as Mclaren will tell you. They are not the real deal and they ant no 01R! Somebody back me up here no Monster im not intrested in what you think i think we can all guess.....

Re: How Much Is the Rarest McLaren?

01R and XP5 are the most valuable in the sense that they will never be sold by McLaren, and therefore they are priceless. If they were to come on the market, I believe 01R would command a higher price than XP5 because of its Le Mans accomplishment. XP5, though it set the world record, is supposedly a stock car and so any McLaren should be capable of doing the same thing. Further, the car has done over 40,000 kms, so it is quite well used, though I am sure it has plenty of life left in it.

01R would probably sell for more than an LM would, simply because of its amazing place in the history and record books.

I don't think the LMs' values will fall, vintage racing or not. First of all, it is likely that only one will trade hands. The one in Japan and the three in Bruneii are unlikely to ever be put up for sale. So it's extremely rare and valuable as well. Plus, it's a stonking car, with the unrestricted higher output motor and the comforts of the street car (except for the deafening transmission with the straight-cut gears, but that adds to its appeal in a masochistic way--or maybe that's just me).

01R and the LM are both extra unique and extra special, but 01R's historic Le Mans win in its first outing, and the fact that it valideated Gordon Murray's vision in such a remarkable manner makes it more special, IMO.

McLaren240!, I am really very interested in what you think. Be sure to reply, ok? Because your opinion really matters. Really, it does. Honest.
