BOV problem and a turbo question

So I bought me an MR2 and I love it! My friend that's amazingly MR-loyal begged me to buy it so I did. But it's got some problems. The turbo's not that great. It's got this massive blowoff valve on it and it's putting out, but I can't hear it at all. The turbo's spooling up but my stock boost gauge is "broken". it goes up, but only when you stomp the gas and I can hear the damn turbo spooling but the gauge just sits there. I got a new one, but it's still on it's way. whatever.

OK so I'm guessing the problem with the BOV is resulting from a problem with the turbo. There's a lot of gunk inside the fan, which is free spinning but not as much as it should be. Also there was a lot of crap all in the exhaust tube from the turbo. Dunno if that's from 13 years of wear or a turbo problem, I suspect the latter. The car was only nominally taken care of, so I wouldn't be surprised if it needed replacing. I talked to a guy at the local performance shop who said it prolly needed to be replaced, but he wants to sell me his 3SGTE turbo, so he's probably bias. I figured I could just buy a bigger turbo while it needs replacing, but in truth, I don't know what to buy. I feel completely retarded & naieve asking about turbos, for christs sake, but ima swallow my pride. Any help?

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

If you just bought the car, I would suggest this:

1. Get the OEM BPV valve on there and make sure it is recirculating. Get rid of that aftermarket BOV.

2. Buy yourself brand new Toyota Cap, Rotor and wires ... and some new plugs.

The biggest, most common causes of poorly running MR2s are BOVS and worn ignition components.

I got new wires and plugs, already working on the cap. As for getting the stock BPV back, not possible. I bought it 400 miles away and the guy I bought it from didn't have it, I asked. And I really don't wanna buy a replacement from Toyota, but I coudln't anyways, the kid had the turboxs BOV welded on.

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

I have an OEM pipe for the stock BPV if you locate a BPV.

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

Alright, aside from all of that. Real question: I wanna put a T3/T4 turbo on instead of the stock turbo. What else do I need to do aside from just slapping a new turbo on. I don't want to run any risk of blowing my engine or something. Help?

I'd say get the KO Racing street brawler T3/T4, you can chose your trim. With that full kit, a good intercooler and exhaust you should be fine... depending on how much boost you'll wanna run and if you tune it...

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

Anytime you increase power, you increase the likelihood of breaking the engine.

I would suggest an upgraded intercooler at the least. Water injection is also a great idea.
You will also want a good boost gauge and boost controller.

Then just get a T3T4 kit. I do not recommend just buying the turbo and trying to get it onto the car ... there are many other pieces needed to get it on the car. It is much simpler to just get a kit.

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

Alright... how much is a kit going to run? I guess I'd ask what's in it, but tha'd be redundant. What kits are there, who makes 'em? I've got the intercooler taken care of and the turbo, I just wanted to know what else I would need? Got a boost gauge, but not a boost controller. (I ran out of money :-P) I was kind of hoping just to get a wastegate instead? Thanks!

Re: BOV problem and a turbo question

The factory turbo already has a wastgate, there is no need to buy one.

Turbo kits run in the $1400 ~ $2300 range.
