Angry Power window trouble

My drivers side power window will not go up. The motor makes a grinding noise, but no movement. Can anyone help me fix it, or tell me a way to get it closed, so we can drive it before we fix it?

Simple temp fix, duct tape and something clear. Looks bad but keeps the snow and cold out. luck

Any ideas on what is wrong with it? The motor runs but no movement?

Re: Power window trouble

It could be the cheap piece of plastic on the end of the power window motor. Looks sort of like a cog cut in half. If the little teeth have worn and it stopped making contact with the gear on the window mechanisim you would hear the grinding noise you are describing..OR... you have reached the limit on the cog and the window went down to far. Pull off the door skin and peak inside. A trip to the junk yard is you best bet to replace just the little plastic part...A new window motor is $$$.

About a year and a half after I bought my 2000 XJ Sport, the driver's side window fell down on a cold night as I was trying to raise it. It was the electric window regulator that was the culprit. I had it fixed under warrantee, but I would think the cost to fix it at a dealership is $150 or so,

OK...could be the motor or the regulator.
BUT sounds like the motor. The motor has a breakaway clutch mechanism so that if you arm is caught in the window, it will not crush your arm. If there is excess friction. or if some thing got caught in the mechanism in the door, this part breaks and the motor keeps spinning. Or it could be the gear (they call this the window regulator...) that raises and lowers the window.

ANYWAY, the fix is the same. Take the door panel off and look at what is happening.....door panel will be hanging with wires attached, so that you can operate the switches.....or you can take the switch pack out and then plug it in for testing. I am an auto mechanic, so the next step is to take the whole regulator and motor out of the door so you can order the right part. You need to change something anyway or the problem will not be fixed. If you don't have a lot of tools take it to a shop.

Are those rivets or nuts and bolts holding in the regulator etc?
