Need help - Y8-Y7-A6 compatibility???????

To make a long story short, I have a 99 Civic EX, the stock Y8 engine seized. However, the head to the Y8 was recovered and used on the Y7 that I bought. Keep in mind, I'm broke. So a friend of mine took the head of the Y8 and put it on the block of the Y7. He did a great job at fixing it, but then I had aother break about 5 months later. By that time my friend has moved.

I have just bought a new replacement engine. Once again, I was on a tight budget. I bought a D16A6, the coolest part about it, is that it came with turbo and an intercooler.
I was reading that it migh be possible to put a Y8 head on the A6 block? Would there be any advantage or disadvantage of keeping the head of the A6 on?

first, i want to know why u went through two engines in 5 months??? and any D series head will fit on any s series block, about advantages.. not too sure, im not that big into d series.

But IMO, swap the Y8 head onto it, its newer and will prolly last longer.

not all d-series heads swap to all d-series blocks. all SOHC d-series heads swap to all SOHC d-series blocks. the SOHC heads DON'T fit the DOHC blocks, and the DOHC heads DON'T fit the SOHC blocks.

knock sensor. i believe it's mounted on the back of the block in the water jacket. it senses piston knocking (detonation). when it senses detonation, the ECU retards the timing to try and help.

i agree as well with how in the hell do u kill two motors in 5 months? do u forget about oil changes??

Re: Re: Re: Need help - Y8-Y7-A6 compatibility???????

To answer the question about the 2 engines, the first was the original from my 99 civic ex, I drove a lot. My commute to work was about 2hrs one way. I know that I should of changed the oil more frequently than the normal 3,000 miles. Since that episode, I have learned to check the oil almost daily to see if it looks dirty. The second engine was a used JDM block. Who knows what went wrong with that one. And yes the oil was checked.

But here is another quesstion I have for you guys, I have a 99 civic ex, what ecu should I be using? Would it be different if the D16A6 has a turbo?

Thanks for your help, your answers will definately reduce the time that I have to ride in my Chevro-Legs & B M Double Shoes. I don't know if I have really bad luck or what, but the when the first engine went, I had had just been fired, the second time it happend, I was only weeks away from being canned. And it's not easy searching for a job when walking around, and funds for repairs are scarce. In fact, does anyone know anyone or somewhere that I could have the engine installed? I'm in San Clemente, Ca which is the southern part of orange county.

So any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need help - Y8-Y7-A6 compatibility???????

well shit man, i'm sorry about ur luck. yes you should use a new ecu with the d16a6, but it will be a lot of work to swap. u'll have to swap harnesses and fabricate sum stuff. won't really be cheap. u could, take the turbo stuff of the a6 (for now), and swap ur factory intake and exhaust manifolds, and all the sensors off ur y8 and put them on the a6. if it's a stock a6 (the internals were left alone), then you should be fine. u could also swap the y8 head (if it's all good) onto the a6 block also and basicly have another y8. if u had this dun, it would prolly run about 800 at a shop depending on how long it took them. that would be roughly a ten hr job. if u weren't so damn far from me, i could do it for u, but that offer dusn't help ya much. shit if u get desperate enough, pm i might be able to walk u thru it with a loooot of corespondance. that or u could fly my ass out there and back. lol anyway, u got questions, lets us here 'em

Re: Re: Need help - Y8-Y7-A6 compatibility???????

Thank you for your help. And honestly I was looking into plane tickets. and that actually turned out to be about 300 roundtrip. I have one or two more sources to ask. One these guys works on chevy's and stuff, and I don't really know the guy, and the other is a good friend of mine who works on his VW bug alot. I have all the manuals, and I was helping my friend out the last time we put the engine in. I think my friend (the vw bug guy) and I could probably put it in. But as far as the ecu, I'm going to need some help. Do you know what ecu I should I use. When I got the engine I was given a couple ecu's.
