FM modulator install help...
I know this is probably a really stupid question, but could someone help with with the installation of a JVC CD changer CH-X200 and JVC FM modulator KS-RF40?
The only thing I need to know is where to hook up the red ( Power ) , Yellow ( Memory back-up ) and ground wire to. I have a 2002 Ford Windstar LX and would like to get this thing installed before I forget what music sounds like. The only reason I went with the FM modulator is because I heard they were easy to install. It probably is, I'm just a moron. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a ton! |

Re: FM modulator install help...
Do you have a stock head unit or is it aftermarket? Either way I'm sure you can tap right into the decks power and acc if you up the amperage of the fuse in the fuse box to make up the difference. just a few amps more would be good. And you will want to tap in as close to the fuse box as possable if not directly into the fusebox.
Walmart sells adapters for fuse boxes that go between an existing fuse and the fusebox and it allows you to tap into the power realy easily. You can ground it to anything that is metal and connected to the body of the truck. The memory backup will need constant power even if the truck is turned off and the power wire needs to be switched on/off with the key. Just in case you needed to know. |

Re: FM modulator install help...
Thanks for the info. I have a factory deck in it right now. I get what you're saying, I just don't know how to go about doing it. Do I cut the wires to the radio, or hook the FM modulator right into the fusebox? I've heard bad things about cutting into the wires of your deck. Right now the wires leading from the FM modulator are bare. I guess they'll have to be attached to something before hooking up to the fusebox? I don't know where to start.
Any more help would be awesome. Thanks! |

Re: FM modulator install help...
No you dont have to cut into any of your wires at all. You are right about it being a not so good thing to do. go directly to the fues box. Get "fuse adapters". They usualy have a "spade" type conection. You can get crimp style connectors that plug right into them. Like I said. Check in the automotive electrical section in walmart or in the parts drawers at a radioshack (they will be by the fuses at either place) and you'll have the best luck. If not ask somebody at a car audio shop.

Re: FM modulator install help...
Thanks again for the help. Would it be possible to use wire taps and attach them to the stereo wires? I've heard that this is way easier than splicing or add on fuses. I just need to figure out which wires are power (continuous) and acc (ignition) but that's no big deal.
Thanks again! |

Re: FM modulator install help...
the modulator wont draw too many amps so you probably will be safe tapping into the stereo wires. You just dont want to cut them.
If the wiring harness on the back of your deck has two plugs these color codes could help you out. Get a test light to be sure though. Black Plug = Speaker Plug : Wht/Grn = R frnt + : Grn/Org = R frnt - : Pnk/Blu = R rear + : Grn/Org = R rear - : Org/Grn = L Frnt + : Blu/Wht = L frnt - : Pnk/Grn = L rear + : Pnk/Blu = L rear - Grey Plug = Power Plug : Yellow/Black = switched 12v : Grn/Yellow = constant 12v : Black = ground |

Re: FM modulator install help...
You're welcome. Im glad I was able to help. I dont know why nobody else posted on your thread though. Probably was'nt a tough enough question for them or something. Remember to use a test light to test the wires before you tap into them. The color codes may not be the right ones. But if you use a test light you can single out the right wires anyway.
the Acc wire should turn on and off with your key and the memory wire should have power all the time even with your key off. The ground can go anywhere that is metal and attatched to the body of your car. All you need to do is use a short sheet metal screw (the very tip of it will look like a drill bit) to attach it. |
