Interesting info on ecm for 95/96/97 ECM's

Well, as the time draws near for my 5.7 vortec swap, I'm accumulating more and more information...My biggest concern has been the ecm and electrical system for the motor. So I've been haunting my local dealerships for various manuals to copy and printouts from their TTII system.... I found out some very interesting things...

95's with ODBII (ecm under the hood) ECM's/harness' have the EXACT same pin outs, circuit id's and colors as the 96/97 ECM's/harness'. The only real variance is on that harness for the injector connector (obvious) and the MAF vs MAP sensor...(and a couple of other accessory connectors) But even with those connectors, the same voltages, resistance values, circuit id's and colors are EXACTLY the same... This includes the pin outs at the firewall.

I decided to go a little bit farther and grab a couple of ecms, 1 from a 95 and 1 from a 97... After tearing them apart all chips, circuit boards etc are EXACTLY the same... Which means that all the tech 2 system is doing is wiping the eprom and inserting different values for the pulsing systems for the injectors and a few other things...

What does this mean? It means you could easily take a 96-current vortec motor with a 96/97 ECM and harness and drop it straight into your 95. (Obviously you would need the proper accessories for the motor, I.E. Ac pump, alt, sensors, etc) I've looked at the schematics of the harness's and as I said, the circuit id's, colors, and resistance variables are all the same...heh...I wish I knew this when my original motor blew!

I should also note that the k1500 harness is basically the same as the others except for additional wires for the 5.7 injector system.

What ecm are you using for the swap? I heard you were using a 5.7 from an escalade- are you using its ecm and harness, or your factory?

The engine is from a 99 escalade. I'm using a k1500 ECM and harness... Virtually the same thing as the 95-97 harness with the diff being some pigtails and the injector connector... Also using a conversion oil pan (to clear the cross member) conversion 2.2 mounts, ls1 conversion headers, the ecm will be reprogrammed on it's fuel curve, and a more agressive cam has been added.

LOL... Don't worry, I've personally certified myself as test pilot! LOL.. Actually I wanted to do an LT1 or LS1 but that is such a wiring nightmare... I just wanted to keep it simple... A buddy of mine did an LT1 in an s10 pickup and converted to AWD... I've driven that truck and it hauls ass...The amount of wiring he had to do was insane...
