Talking Another Sad Saab Story

Guess what happened to me!

I was fortunate enough to be out driving Saturday night at 1AM
just hunting for someone to race. I found two lucky contestants.

First, it was an RX-7. An older one though, looked like a 92ish, but
it was all rusted out, but sounded really good. I paced him all the way to the red light, and then put it in neutral revving it up. The young guy inside looked astonished that someone wanted to race.

So the light turned green, and i gave him the start, as i had to put it in drive and THEN hit the gas. He was in 3rd gear by the time i caught him, which was just after my shift to second. From there he just got smaller and smaller. I think it was just a POS that i was against, as if he lost that bad it couldn't have been modded.

Then later on, i'm rolling down a back stretch of road which is perfect for racing cuz it's got good turns and about 3 miles of nothing until it meets with another major road. Anyways, so i'm on this thing, and the speed limit is 70km/h and i'm doing about 60 just taking my sweet time. I check my rearview and there's a car coming up at a decent speed, so i give it a little more gas and push it up to 85. This car keeps coming. I decided to wait until he got close and then i'd pace hima dn just see what happens.

As luck would have it, it turned out to be about a '93ish SAAB 900 turbo.
I'm never raced against another performance sedan type, let alone one with a turbo. I floored it and paced him, and the dude in side looked like he wanted to play aswell.

We did the classic out power the guy until about 100km/h when he tapped his horn. I looked over and he mouthed the words "on three".
He honked one two three and we both floored it.

Now this is where it got interesting. His turbo was one of the kind that didn't kick in until the higher RPMs were met is what i figure, because i took off like crazy and he stayed behind a bit. But then he started to gain, really fast. Using some quick student thinking, i turned off the traction control just as we entered the first turn.

This turn shouldn't have been taken at more then about 110km/h, but we hit it at about 150. We sailed through, tires screaming, and the SAAB didn't handle it as well as the Bonneville did so i came out one top. It basically went on like this, where i out cornered him and accelerated faster all the way down the road, but he was never more then 3-4 car lengths back because of his turbo. It was a good time, and he was amzed that the supercharger did as well as it did when we talked at the next red light. I ended up buying him a beer for his close run, but in all it was un-mistaken that the Bonneville held the win.

That's my story, peace everyone!

I am suprized the Saab was able to keep up with you. They arent that fast, have you ever seen the turbo on those real small no intercooler. I guess it might depend on the year. Good kills though.

sounds cool..i like that kind of racing, i think its more of a thorough test of racing skills than straight drag...but drift racing is the shit..i watched a video of a Jun 700 HP Supra drifting...amazing

no, i don't neutral drop, that's the fastest way to screw up the engine!

In this case, i was just reving my engine up to egg the guy on, and i
know my s/c will have the jump on his turbo, so i let him have the start.
When the light turned green i stopped reving put it in drive and took off
after him. he only had about 5 feet on me when i hit the gas anyways!

Yeah, and i try and pick the races that are semi-fair to everyone,
and i don't know if i just out drive most of these guys or what. I
won't race a camro that's been dropped, but i'll take on a supped up
Honda any day. I have yet to lose to one, so it's all good!

I haven't lost a race yet either, but I suppose Weight/Power ratio doesn't have a thing to do with it.

Although I do fear the day I end up racing a car like the Walser Supra, Blitz Skyline, Imoto RX-7, or just a super hyped up TA or Z28.

I also have not lost a race yet in my cobra, of course i have had it less then a year. Now in my previous car a 1995 mustang v6 with a couple basic mods i was only beaten twice in a period of a couple years. The first time was by a porshe GT2 turbo, smoked me like i was sitting still... no duh, least i tried. And the second time was by a riced out integra, i fumbled second gear, my fault, i was ahead untill then. But, hey the stang was only a v6. My cobra 5.0 rocks

I'm not a big mustang fan, but power to ya if you like em, they do look good that's for sure!!!

R1 Rider why are you afraid of the RX-7? I stomped one of those one the highway one day. They're quick off the start, i won't race one unless it's 1/4 mile or something, but they don't have much in the top end.

Then again, i may have raced a shitty year, it was 93-96 or something like that. Anyways, don't fear an RX-7 if you've got the top end. They're not as quick up there as you may think.
