Leaf springs over axle?

Ive got a 91 S-10 Blazer and I was wondering how hard it would be to put the leaf springs on top of the axle. By looking at it, it looks like it could be done by removing the rear tires, manuvering the axle below the leafs, and switching the position of the u-bolts. And in doing this, will it screw anything up? Also would it raise the rear end at all? Thanks

Re: Leaf springs over axle?

You will notice that there are flat spring pads welded to the axle. they have to lay against the spring to keep from rotating. To do what you're proposing, they will have to be cut off and rewelded to the top of the axle tube. Must be done by an expert for correct positioning and also could warp the tube. Now after that is done, the driveline angle would be too extreme so the rest of the drivetrain would have to be realigned (relocate crossmember and reposition motor mounts). Many of thousands of dollars later, you're set.

Re: Leaf springs over axle?

Actually trailmaster makes a proper kit to do spring over axel... This is done for their suspension lifts... Understand though you are going to be raising your back end 4-5 inches.... So don't do this unless you're going to raise the front as well.
